We want to honor our Associate Pastor/Youth Pastor with a T-Shirt quilt for his 25th anniversary of service to our church. We have a lot of t-shirts that have been made throughout the years he has been with us. Can anyone give me some pointers on how best to assemble the quilt and some precautions I should be aware of in assembling the quilt. Is it best to use strips between each t-shirt or sew the t-shirt pieces together without strips in between each one? If strips need to be used, what type of material would be best? We want to use the quilt as a wall hanging for the Youth Room. Thanks for all your help!

Make sure to back the shirts with stabilizer, and you don't have to put sashing between, if you go to the search at the top of the page and just type t-shirt quilt you will see examples. I made a t-shirt quilt using baseball jerseys and used sashing between so I could avoid quilting on the jersey. Good luck and have fun.

Use a non-woven (knit) stabilizer. Cut the area of the t-shirt larger than the finished block size. Iron according to the stabilizer direction opposite the stretch of the t-shirt, i.e., t-shirt going east/west, the knit stabilizer going north/south. Once stabilized, you can trim to the exact size of the block you desire.

Adding sashing helps when you have lots of different sizes of t-shirts to work with. I'm working on a rock band t-shirt quilt and the small to really big sizes have been a pain to make it all work. My blocks ended up finishing up at 18".
