Machine Jamming up
Hello, I just recently bought a Singer Confidence Sewing machine from a student who only used it to sew a pair of PJs and a pillow, so it is virtually unused. It has been working fine for the past 3 weeks, but it jammed today and I am at a loss on how to fix it. I believe it is the timing that is off, but I will tell you what happened and see if I am correct. The machine jammed and the bobbin thread became tangled. When I removed the tangle, the needle is hitting something underneath the bobbin holder and will not depress completely down. Also, I can no longer get the needle plate back into place. Can anyone out there help me or do I have to take it in for service?

This happened to me striped down the machine and gave it a very good clean. It was full of furry bunnies every where .
Gave it a new needle and changed the type of thread and started again. Also checked to see about oiling. One drop of oil wiped around bobbin casing and wipe needle.practise on spare material as oil may leak.
Clean down the two slits in machine top if you can a feather is useful. This may solve the problem as the bunnies get everywhere.

I'd try removing the throat plate to see what's under there. Could be something jumped out of alignment.
Also, disassemble the shuttle race. Sometimes just taking things apart and reassembling is all it takes.
**I'm assuming this is a manual machine? Not electronic.

Lakotawoman, you said, "the needle is hitting something underneath the bobbin holder and will not depress completely down." Please take the machine back to your dealer if none of the above solutions work. That is the classic symptom of a machine that is out of time and needs a serviceman to reset the timing. I hope one of the other girls solutions works, especially if they have the identical model as yours.
