I have never used a table runner but know that if I did, my cats would lay on it.

My cats are not "allowed" on the table however, no matter how strict I try to be, my cats are supervised for most of the day by a DH who will not discipline to my standards. (We had the same problem with our son - who despite this turned out great.)

Go for the table runner and let the cats have a little fun. :-D

Persistence is the key...we have a "no furred creatures on where food goes" rule. Takes time a squirt bottle and a hand slammed on a table/counter and a loud NO to get the message through. But, if all else fails, make a bunch of tablerunners so you will have "backups" if there is a mutiny.

I tried the spray bottle of water but my little white cat Nipper came to love being sprayed! never did figure out how to keep him off the counters, placemats, etc. I miss him (he passed away last year Jan. at 14 yrs old). wish he was still laying on my placemats.

I would like to say that my cats are not allowed on the table. I made new Table runner, placemats and so proud of them. Laid them on the table to show off and I got up the other morning at 3 am, walked into the kitchen and BOTH cats are sound a sleep on my new table decorations!! So much for that blind thought.
