Question triangles to create a square block

I’m thinking of creating a four triangle block by putting two squares together, stitching diagonally down the middle either side of the drawn line and then cutting in half before turning them to put them back together and stitching again either side of the diagonal line but how do I work out what size squares to start with? I hope you don’t mind me asking – not sure you will understand what I’ve written but the picture might help. I need my finished block to be 7 1/2” square with seam allowance.

Start with 2 squares at 9" square and square up AFTER you've finished the piecing. Easy!

Doing it that way will ensure it will be the right size and square!
