I am putting a 1" binding on a wall hanging and can't seem to get the corners mitered. I've viewed half a dozen tutorials, but they all seem to be for a 1/4-1/2" binding, and that technique doesn't work for the wider binding. I cut 4 1/2" strips, folded them lengthwise, sewed them to the top edges of the quilt top in a 1/4" seam, folded it over the edge, but can't seem to get the miter right. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I like to glue baste them in place, and then sew them down :D

I do them one corner at a time, just like you would without using the glue :D:D:D

check the tutorials there are good instructions for mitering bindings; is it the front or the back you are having a problem with? if it is the front you may need to do some un-sewing. when stitching the binding to the front you have to stop right on the 1/4" spot of the corner; take the quilt out, turn it, fold the binding up, then straight down, line up the edge with the raw edges and start stitching again to the next corner (1/4" from the corner in both directions.

if the miter is a problem on the back and you have a whole 1" to work with you can clip excess if you need to but you should be able to fold a good miter with that much fabric to work with.

is the batting and backing still larger than the quilt top? if it is then you will be okay. to get the corners mitered you do the same as you would with any size. however you stop from the edge of either the quilt top or what will be the edge after trimming up, the finished width that you want the binding to be. you can pm me if you have questions. hope this makes since.

I wonder if the problem is on the step where you fold the binding down with the fold edge even with the top edge? Maybe this isn't leaving enough to fold over and get a point. Try making that fold one inch -- what I mean is follow the same steps as with 1/4 inch binding, but when you stop stitching 1/4 inch away from the edge and fold the binding up, then straight down, rather than line that fold up with the top edge, (1/4 inch again) try having the fold edge 1 inch from the stitching line. Is that clear as mud?! Not sure this will work, but it sounds good to me. If you try it, let us know if it works.

thats how i do them to sometimes..i use elmers school glue with a special tip i got at JA's
