I often use thread a few shades darker or lighter than the fabric for my wholecloths because the quilting stands out and that looks interesting. The important thing is that YOU like it! It's your quilt!
Please show some pics!

As far as I know the inks on the preprinted tops can be set when you iron them and the producers suggest not to do it.

I have seen whole cloth quilts done with variegated (and sometimes just solid color) thread and they are lovely. I haven't used wool batting, so can't help you there.

I did a baby wholecloth quilt once to practice my hand quilting and I did it in colored thread to see how my stitches looked. It was while I was on a "perfection" kick!! NO MORE! I takes it as it comes!!

Actually I think the variegated thread would look lovely on whole cloth quilts.

Just think how beautiful it'll be when its done!! Not all quilting is done by matching thread color to the material. I'm one to do something like that on purpose!!  My very first hand-quilted project was with a blue fabric and I used white thread to outline the rose. Still like it to this day!!

Remember when candlewicking was popular? I did a queen-size quilt, using white on white. It is really pretty ....up close! But when you are standing back from the bed, it just looks wrinkled. I wish I HAD used a colored thread to do all those French knots, at least it would have showed up!!

Yes, I am the quilt police! When you have you mini wholecloth conpletely finished, you are required to notify me with in 24 hours. Then I will come to your house and inspect the mini wholecloth sewn with varigated thread. Then I will have to confiscate the quilt. It will need to be held at my house for the rest of its life, as evidence of course.

Hugs, Gail
