Okay, so I'm sure this has been asked a million times, and I should continue looking/searching old posts, but I've searched calculating, 2" blocks and lap quilt math and looked at least 15-20 posts per search and found nothing.

So, can anyone tell me how to calculate the number of 2" squares I would need for a lap quilt? Let's say 40X60, just to put a number on it.

I used to be really good at algebra, but I haven't taken a math class in more than 10 years and it's definitely a use it or loose it subject.

It's easy enough to me. If you want 2" finished, then divide 40" by 2. Seems to me you would need 20 across and 30 down. Then add 1/2" to each one for seams.

I'm figuring 600 sq's. That would be 20 across and 30 down.

It's entirely too early, and I am clearly not awake yet. As soon as I made my last post the answer came to me. At least I think it did. Tell me is my math on point?

width
2x - 1/2x = 42
1.5x = 40
x=28

length
2x -1/2x = 60
1.5x = 60
x=40

28x40=1120

So I'd need 1120 2 inch squares (1.5 inch finished) for a lap quilt that was 42x60?

Not to worry....it's easy and doesn't even involve algebra.....
40" divided by 2" = 20 squares
60" divided by 2" = 30 squares

20 squares across multiplied by 30 squares down = 600 squares

If you want your squares to be 2" finished, then you'll want to cut 2 1/2" squares. Unless you want them all to be totally random, you might want to consider strip piecing vs cutting all those little squares....just a thought! Good luck!

1080 if your cut size is 2" (finished size 1 1/2" ).
600 if your finished size is 2" (cut size 2 1/2" ).

let's see... if you're wanting the squares to be 2" Finished size...

40"/2" = 20 squares across (cut at 2.5 inches)
60"/2" = 30 squares down
20x30 = 600 squares, cut at 2.5 inches.

If you add a narrow border, your quilt should finish at a nice size.

I hope my math is correct... Perhaps I should be waiting until I've had more Coffee!!! lol...

I have a chart that indicates you will be able to get 357 2" squares from a yard, 99 from a fat quarter. Now I do not know if that is finished or not.
