Default 1/2 triangle star blocks in rag quilt?

I need to start working on a gift - thinking of a rag quilt but would like to include a block pattern ( i’m Thinking of a Star made out of 1/2 square triangles- something a bit more interesting than sewing squares together. I would make the block, sandwich it with flannel, and have an unprecedented block for the back. I would either make an outline of the star or just do an “x” like a regular rag quilt. I’m sure someone has done this before . Are there any concerns making a rag quilt this way?thanks

When I made the three I gave as Christmas gifts, I cut 5" squares that finished to 4". Two were two layers of flannel with a medium weight denim back and the third was three layers of flannel. All three quilts were heavy. If I were to do another rag quilt I don't think I'd cut the squares smaller than 7". I would go with a large finished size block if I were to do a pieced block instead of squares.

I just finished a couple of rag quilts that are used with stuffed animals for police cars in our area. It is a quilt guild project. I made mine with charm squares. I used a 4 1/4" square of batting between two layers of flannel. I see no reason why you can't use half squares (or anything else) to make a design. You could stitch the seams of your star to the inside and clip around the outside of the design. I think it sounds exciting to try. They are lots of fun to make.

It will work if you make your stars fairly large. I don't think I would want to work with a half square triangle as small as those I use on pieced quilts. I made a rag quilt with all different sizes and shapes of pieces....and it was OK, but some of the pieces really should have been larger. Size really matters in a rag quilt....IMHO.

I agree with Granky. I made a funky star rag quilt with homespun and flannel. I think the squares were 10". I drew the star on the top layer. Then cut down to what I wanted to show. I may have used two layers of homespun to get variation. If I can find a picture I will post it. Turned out pretty good.
