I was just wondering when you make baby quilts how big do you usually make them? I recently purchased this Schnibbles pattern it's called State Fair and the finish quilt would be 31" x 31" just wondering if that would be big enough? Sorry I'm new to quilting and am not sure of proper quilt sizes yet. Thanks Cindy

State Fair Finished Size 31" x 31"

it'll be fine for a newborn but sure won't be able to use it very long, I try to go for at least 45"-50" square

I make mine the width of the backing fabric, around 42-45". There is no right or wrong, I just want mine to be used longer. If I were doing this pattern, I would add to it.

I also have this pattern its called Crazy Eights Bit N Pieces finished it's 38"x 45". If i were to make a quilt bigger how would I go about doing that? Just make extra blocks and add them. Sorry if these are dumb questions.

Seems kind of small to me, but I like mine to be used longer then as an infant

Can you add another border ?

I have that pattern too. I do think that it would be fine, but if you want to make it a little larger, I believe you could just add maybe 4 quilters eighths and cut as you do the rest of them and then you would have extra blocks to add to the width or the length. Haven't really checked the pattern out yet, but I believe it would work. Since this quilt doesn't already have one, nother option is to add a 4 inch border all around. That is always an easy way to make a quilt a little larger.

on the first one i would add a row of blocks on one side and the top or bottom. this way the dimentions will remain simmilar and the size will just be increased. if you get what I am saying. I don't like to make baby quilts that are smaller than 40" because who wants to have a blanket that they can't keep using. My kids have crib sets that they crib blanket was just too small to keep in the bed as they grew. it wouldn't keep them covered at all. All this talk of babies makes me wish that my bro and sil would hurry up and get busy getting threw school and getting a place of their own so that they could have kids. I told my sil that I was going to make the babies bedding set when she had her kids. Especially the quilt she can pick the fabric or colors and help me pick out the pattern for it. (I want to make something that she will like and use.)

But I have 3 cousins who are going to have babies and I would like to try and make quilts for themas gifts and like you all have said I would like them to have the quilts for a bit longer then just infancy.

I make my baby quilts at least 45 X 60 so they can be used longer.

I saw this pattern at my lqs the other day and had it in my hand but put it back. It's called remember whoooo loves you. Do you think this would be too difficult for a beginner to do? It has two different sized patterns in it one is 38"x 50" and the other is 40" x 52"
