Default US versus Canadian Pricing..Today's "Deal"

Went to local fabric store for their 50% sale here in Canada.
I wanted to buy a 12 1/2 x 12 1/2 Omnigrid ruler...The price? $72.99.
(They're on sale for $17.99 at Joann's in the US right now...)
I looked through them and one was marked at $55.99...maybe old stock?....So I bought that one at 50% off. Still paid $28.00 plus tax for it.
I also looked at batiks, but they were still $15.00/m even with the sale. 100% cottons were still $9.00/m and that's with 50% off.

So, there's an example of what Canadian quilters are up against when we shop for our supplies here. Count your lucky stars the next time you go to buy fabrics and supplies.
And look for the occasional Canadian who is lucky enough to live nearby.

Oh, my...that really is a big price difference. That would eliminate a lot of people from becoming quilters.

OMG, my question would be Why????? Is it the shipping cost from another country?

I shipped a box of fabrics to England, wasn't huge and I paid $25, I about had a heart attack but since I promised a YT member I paid it. I love doing things like that but spending that much almost kept me from doing it again..

Can you buy online and save anything?

I do appreciate the USA.......blessed to live here.

Were you at Fabricland?
I rarely go near them any more.
Their regular prices whether fabric or notions always seem way above the LQS stores.
Meanwhile their quality doesn't really match the LQS' for the better part.

I find that their 50% off days bring their prices back closer to the LQS prices!
Sometimes so that they are lower in price.

I am glad that I don't have to buy much anymore because the prices are high. If I do have to buy, I check Connectingthreads or similar and then figure out the postage and hope I don't get hit with duty. I feel bad when a quilt shop closes but I just can't afford the prices.

Joann's used to deliver to Canada. That was a blessing. But they discontinued that service over a year ago. Grr!!

I agree that our prices seem a lot more reasonable. Until you start talking about medical care or college... But we don't want to do that!!

Regardless of where you live, it pays to look around. Just before Christmas, Joann's routinely had coupons for 50% off of 1 regular price item, sometimes 60%. I generally buy my Olfa blades in multi packs to get the best price per blade. I was annoyed to find that I can get the same pack any time, no coupon, no waiting to get the item (they are behind the counter now), no waiting in line - for less than what I can get it at Joann's with the coupon - on Amazon. We do enough of our shopping through them that Prime Membership more than pays for itself.

Not sure if that will help you, but it might be worth a shot. I've also found good deals at www.stuff4crafts.com. Not a lot of quilting supplies, but every now and then I get lucky. I got a Better Board for under $100 last year.
