As to cleaning your iron of the buildup, I use Dritz's "Iron Off" in a tube found in the sewing dept of Walmart. I put some on an old rag and run my iron over the stuff. It may take a couple times depending on how much buildup you have but it works great for me. I haven't had to use it in some time now.

When I iron with starch (I use the spray) I keep a used dryer sheet on the ironing board and after every item I iron I run the iron on the dryer sheet. I do spray the sheet with water from time to time - but since I have started doing that there is absolutely no build up on the iron.
I have used the Magic Eraser, my iron had the teflon coating and the eraser ruined the iron.
People kept coming up with new ideas on how to use the used dryer sheets and this was one of the ideas. I started to save the used sheets (now I use the wool dryer balls) but have the used sheets kept in an old kleenex box.
