Walking foot or Stitch In The Ditch foot for quilting?

I have only usem my SID foot for the bands when making pillow cases. I tried using the SID only once on a sandwiched quilt and it was horrible! I agree with the poster who said SID only works on two layers. When stitching on the quilt sandwich I either use my walking foot or my FMQ foot.

I always use my walking foot for SITD for any straight sewing. To keep the stitching straight mine has an attachment that you plug into it to align and keep the stitch straight. I have never used it.
I also, didn't know there was a SITD attachment!

I use both at the same time on my Viking. They've got a walking foot with snap in feet, one of which is a stitch in the ditch foot. It's great! I do mainly FMQ, but I like to stitch in the ditch around the borders to separate the design a bit.

Honestly, I would try BOTH if you have both feet. It's not going to ruin a block either way. Then see what you like better for that particular quilt. I totally understand why others are posting how they love their walking foot, but I do much better getting even stitches in the ditch using the SITD foot. I suspect it could be a mileage-may-vary-thing.

I purchased the SITD sole for my 440 walking foot. I fell in love with SITD after using it just once! I didn't have to work to make sure I was in the ditch the foot did it for me. When I tried SID without the sole it was not a pretty sight at all. I primarily use SITD to stabilize my quilts before I start quilting. I also have begun using 505 spray exclusively. I've yet to have a problem with the gummy needles and I would say I am rather heavy handed when I spray the edges of the quilt. I do, however, give it a day or more to fully dry before I begin quilting.
I would say, to your question about using SITD foot without the walking foot, the walking foot moves all three layers with just the foot there may be puckering. Even with a good spraying.
