I believe the definition of 'quilt (n.)' currently used by most quilting organizations (as opposed to a dictionary) is 'three layers joined together by stitching'. At least that's what I see in all competition rules, traditional and otherwise. Does not have to be batting in the middle, does not have to be stitched with thread, size does not matter, purpose does not matter. You don't have to agree, but they are the ones making the rules so they get to call it what they want. :roll:

Well we had a thread all about this when some members of the quilt guild I was going to said I was not a quilter because I do miniatures and the quilters on this group took one look and said that they aRE QUILTS I have one that has 48 two inch blocks that have 13 pieces in each log cabin block each block is only two inches square I dont know but it takes me as much work and as much time to do these as it does to make a king size quilt I just prefer the miniatures

I think, for me, that by definition, any sized three - layered sandwich that is quilted upon by whatever method, whatever the size - Whatever the purpose- is a quilt. That's why we can use the word as an adjective as well, in quilted jacket, quilted bag etc."Wall Hanging" is not specific enough either, as it could be made from macrame etc.

I agree, a quilt is composed of a top, batting and backing (sometimes doesn't even have to have batting). It can be a wall hanging or any size, doesn't have to be on a bed. I make quilts, but none are on my beds. They are hanging over the railing/banisters, on quilt racks and on my walls. Even big ones go on my walls as 'art'.

I also agree. They are quilts, not blankets!!!

It it's pieced but not quilted, then it's patchwork, which is a lovely craft in itself -- but it's not quilting.

I have no issues with the size of the project, but I do think that terms for technique have gotten very fuzzy.

I have a wallhanging in my living room that I made about four years ago, measures 18" square. That "quilt" gave me more trouble than any other I have made, including a king size one. I have been sewing for a long, long time and that wallhanging was about the end of my sewing/quilting hobby! I laugh about it now, but believe me, I wasn't laughing then. So it's not always the size that makes a quilt a quilt--I know that from experience!

That is a tradition of Native North Americans, it's because of it's use, not to put down the art - even the most intricate combos of patch and applique with embroidery + you name it are 'blankets' - I think i't kind of folksy and nice, once you get used to it!

PS - one of the best quilt shops around Montreal is on the Mohawk reservation here - the ladies that run it take a super, personal interest in everybody's 'blanket' projects! I gues I've gotten a bit partial to it!!
