Has anyone ever done Sashiko stitching. Curious about thread. I have read about sashiko thread and wonder how different it is from a light weight crochet thread. No one in my area has this thread in their shop. It is not made to pull apart as DMC hand embroidery. Wonder if it is like button hole thread?

Have done a little of this - used the specialist sashiko thread - and also Pearl No 8 - works great! Learnt from a very experienced (and awarded) quilter the technique combined with quilt as you go log cabin blocks - sashiko designs were stitched in the centres of the blocks - lovely project :)

I saw someone demo Sashiko using 12 wt thread from Sulky. Some quilt stores carry it. It comes in many colors and varigated. I use the 12 wt to do hand embroidery work instead of floss because it doesn't separate and is much faster to work with than floss.

I just took a class to learn Sashiko. The class was terrific, I may take it again. The thread the teacher said to use was DMC Cotton Perle. This is for hand Sashiko, not machine.

perle cotton works well- comes in different weights and many many colors--is easier to find.

I just saw the Baby Lock Sashiko machine - wow it is very cool - love the stitch - didn't like the price - it was $1900. I think I could learn by hand much easier...

I have done a small project using the sashiko thread and it is supposed to lay flatter and smoother than perle cotton or embroidery floss. Since I've only used the sashiko I can't compare but if I continue to do sashiko I am going to use the perle cotton because I have it and it is available more easily than the sashiko. I got my sashiko thread from the quilt store offering classes in sashiko.
