Someone told me once to use wax paper to clean my iron. Has anyone heard of this and if so, how is it done?

I've never heard that waxed paper can "clean" an iron. I know I use it to make my iron glide better. I just iron a piece of waxed paper when my iron is hot.

I've not heard of this, but I've heard of used dryer sheets.

I use "Iron off" by Dritz that I purchase at my local Joann's but read the instructions carefully before usning it. Also is you are in a pinch wade up a piece of aluminum foil and rub it over the bottom of your iron. That works fairly well.

I've just laid a terry towel on ironing board, put wax paper on top and iron while iron is hot. This does not 'clean' the iron if anything is stuck on it, just glides better. The iron off or an iron cleaning product is used in a similiar fashion. Directions are on container.

We used to sprinkle salt on waxed paper and run the hot iron over it. The salt cleaned it and the waxed paper made it slick again. However, that was way before teflon irons (though not "before the 50's"!!).

We used this all the time when I was growing up and I still do...when my iron gets sticky and fuzzy, I use the wax paper and get it nice and smooth. Sometimes I use a PLASTIC scrubby on a COLD iron first if it is really messy , then wax it up.
