Has anyone made a quilt as a duvet cover? I am wondering would it not hold together well if I did this?

Anyone have pics for it? Or instructions or advice?

Thanks!

I think if you backed it and quilted it onto a sheet it would hold up fine. I wouldn't leave it just pieced with no backing though. That would only hold up until it's washed. Unless you did some fancy stitching over each seam sort of like a crazy quilt, then it might hold up longer without being quilted onto a backing but you'd still get lots of loose threads on your duvet.

I know there was an episode of Simply Quilts where she made a quilted duvet cover. You might see if there's some site that still has her old shows archived. I used to watch them on DIY or HGTV. The one she did was very pretty, but I don't remember the details as far as construction. Seems like she did a normal quilt, then did the "pillow case" finish with a separate sheet of fabric. But I'm not sure.

One of my friends did this. She layered the pieced top with two backings and the duvet and sewed them together around the outside edge and left an opening to turn it. It gave the quilt top a backing and a back for the duvet at the same time. She said turning it right side out was like gutting a whale. LOL

There was a thread a few weeks ago about this topic. I have made them. When you make the quilt top for the duvet you treat it as a quilt top, then add your back fabric with the opening where you want it. I am sure if you google quilted duvet covers you should come up with something.

I'm sure you can use any quilt pattern you want as long as it comes out the right size.

Should I serge the quilt top? or just sew it? Should I use 1/4" seams still? Do you I put a batting behind the quilt top or muslin? It does get very cold -40C sometimes here in the winter and warm in the summers +30C.

My friend didn't put batting in hers and she didn't quilt the top to the backing either. I suppose you could serge the seams in the top if you use a fairly simple pattern. A lot of these choices are personal creative decisions.

I've been thinking of making one too. If I ever get to it I think I will quilt the
top to some muslin (no batting) then add a backing to make the case. That
way I can wash the cover without the seams fraying. I prefer to use French
seams for pillowcases and duvet covers. Makes it stronger and very
washable.
