Just add some squares the same size and the possibilities are unlimited. Many star blocks are made this way.
You can put two togather to look like flying geese.

since my left over hst's are probably different sizes i was thinking of putting background strips around them to make them all fit and they would look as if they were floating. i could even tilt some.

This is just too funny!! I was actually going through quilting books last night looking for different blocks for the same reason. I found a scrappy charm quilt in 101 Fabulous Rotary-Cut Quilts that looks promising. Also, Crown of Thorns, Delectable Mountains and Friendship Star. Went through Carrie Hall Blocks and the Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns also. All my HST are 1.5", so I need something not too outrageously difficult. I'm just not used to piecing this small!! Rhonda, Rhonda, where are you!!!

Ranger--you've got lots of ideas here! I like the Friendship star too, but a shoo fly block or hole in the barn door works as well. Then there's all the different basket blocks and the "tree of ..." blocks. Several HST's would make a great doll quilt as well.
I just posted a "random triangles..." post last week. Good luck.

I looked at your random triangles...lovely...that's a good one for HSTs. I've got some of them used in a couple of baby quilts..still have a lot more.
