I have an old lone star quilt kit my mother had. I have sewn it together & everything looked good--until the final points of the star was sewn together. The center puckers! Any ideas on how to get it to sew together smooth without the center puckers?

sew it together in pairs, then the pairs together into 2 halves, pinning at each match point & nesting the seams- press well (perhaps with starch as you complete each section- then sew the 2 halves together- i've had a couple which i actually matched my centers- pinned all the way across then started sewing in the center- out to one side- then turned over went back to center & sewed out to the other side. as long as your seams are nested, it is pressed well and you do it in sections it should go together nice & flat.

Generally speaking, if the 8 sections don't match when sewn together - at least one of the sections is the wrong size. If I were you I would measure (down to the 1/16th inch) all four sides of each of the eight star arms and trim (if you can) the ones that are oversized. After that - put it back together as CKcowl suggests. Starch helps too - but remember now that they are pieced ALL the edges are bias edges so don't stretch it when you starch/iron it.

When I do a lone star, I put it together in quarters first (sew the points in pairs). Then I TRIM - make sure each quarter has a perfect 90 degree corner. Then you can sew pairs - and again, trim to make sure you have a perfect straight edge. And finally, sew the two halves together. If you have a 45 degree ruler, you can check the star before the first pairing. But if not, I find this works well.

Thanks all! I sewed it in pairs and then the pairs and then the halves. I will try from center out - and try not to stretch it! I guess I will reverse sew the main sections starting with the halves tonight.
