There is a slot on the spools that you can wind the thread around. The end kind of pops open to do this.

book binding, like the ones on cookbooks. just cut them apart and slip over the bobbin

I bought a small stand for regular spools of thread that sits up, put my bobbins on there, they don't unroll and I can see the colors. I really like it.
