I would like a new sewing machine for Christmas, the machine I have is very basic and will not quilt. What kind of machine would you suggest? I am a very new quilter. I also need something that is under 500.00. Thanks.

I've only been quilting 2 years. My LQS suggested Janome 8077 Works well for me & in the price range.

I have a Janome memory craft 4400...very nice machine...still going strong after 7 years! I think it is around your price range.

For anyone that is looking for a sewing machine without the bells and whistles that can be used with or without the foot pedal,I found one at my local WalMart. I had made a list of what I didn't need in one and what I did need. I prefer to hand quilt and hand embroider,so I didn't need a machine to do that. All I do is sew quilt tops together and fix tears in my grandchildren's clothes. This has the quilting feet and a wide table. But it Was the fact that it had the option to use the foot pedal or not use to use the foot pedal. The feature that I could use it without my foot that sold me. It's also very quiet and has a lot of stitches.It only cost $199.00. Go online and look at it . It's called the Brother SQ9000. You just need to sit and make a list of what you will be doing with your machine and then go shoping.The foot-free option will make it so make easier on the days that my legs don't work. Other people have put WalMart down,but the Machine I am using now came from there 12 years ago and it still works.

Any sewing machine can quilt. All you need is a darning foot and lower or cover the feed dogs. Every brand of sewing machine has pros and cons. Buy the one you like at the price you can afford and don't think about the one you didn't buy.

I think a couple of things are important, being able to change the needle position so that you can do 1/4" and scant 1/4" seams and also that the area where the quilt can go (I don't recall what it is called)the area between the needle and the machine - the bigger the better. I quess I would make a list of what you want and what you want to do and go from there. Lucky you to get a new machine, best wishes and happy sewing!!!
