Default So slow down already!

I teach piano and tell the kids frequently: the secret to success is SLOW practice and ... there's no such thing as too slow. But today I had a revelation in my sewing. SLow down already! I tend to Zippity Doo Dah through things and .. then have to SLOWLY rip. So today - as I sewed rick rack on an appliqued block and appliqued on those blocks I FINALLY learned that it goes so much better when I sew slowly. Sigh. Such an easy lesson - why am I such a slow learner?

It's just kinda like the whole world is today ... fast, fast, fast! One of my favorite sayings, and my family hears it a lot, is "if you don't have time to do it right the first time, you sure don't have time to do it again!" So yes, slow and steady gets it done!

Sometimes we are our own worst students. I think most are in a rush to get things finished but then get frustrated because it didn't fit together right. I have always gone slow because I am so overly critical of my own work.

well, i am a careful cutter, and extremely careful about matching points, corners and edges.... and when it's all in the right place, i go as fast as the foot feed will go...am on my second foot control for a 10 yr old machine and had 3 for the last pfaff.... this one will last longer as i piece everything i can on my serger.....now that's fast! to each his/her own! enjoy... we should all love quilting just the way we do it.....

Someone on this board told me to slow down and take my time, that there was no rush in making a quilt.
As soon as I followed her advice my quilting was much improved.
It was the best advice, and I received a lot of good advice from all you quilters.
Thank you all.

I have never been a "speed" sewer, but my sister is !! The first time we ever got together for a long weekend sew-a-thon, my head popped up in SHOCK when I heard her machine going.....on applique mind you,......no wonder her stitching was a mess...She could never understand why hers didn't look like mine. I had to find a really nice way to let her know how much it would improve if she would just slooooowwwww down. She's doing better now but occasionally she needs a gentle reminder.

That's funny.....my husband is always telling me to speed it up. LOL Anytime we go shopping or to a sporting event I have to almost run to keep up with him. He just can't understand that I am short with short legs and my stride is NOT as long as his.

As far as sewing too fast. That used to be me too...always in a hurry to see the finished project. I've slowed down considerably; and if I don't quite understand something I don't just go ahead and hope for the best. I'll read the instructions many times and if I still don't understand then I will start searching online. The worst feeling is when you complete your project and it looks horrible. It gets stuffed in a bag and put away in the closet to be "fixed" someday.
