I'm kinda new to quilting and just wondered...I've seen postings about people buying whole bolts of material. How many yards of fabric is on a new bolt?

20 usually.

I usually only bought muslin by the bolt for use in my upholstery shop. I used as the decking of sofas and chairs, under neath the cushions. And as lining for the skirts at the bottom.

Just buy what you need to start with on each project. Scour the thrift stores for remnant bags. I buy alot of end of the bolt stuff and stuff on clearance.

It varies.. however if you look on the end of the bolt when your shopping it will tell you exactly how much is in that full bolt

I got one at JoAnn's that was only 8, I guess it depends on the manufacturer

I learned not to trust what the bolt says. I bought a bolt that said it had ten yards on and just out of curiosity I had the girl make sure and it was a fourth of a yard short. This was a brand new bolt that still had the paper wrapped around it. BTW most of us are fabric addicts we buy what we can when we can.

A way to estimate how much fabric is wrapped on a cardboard:

2 times around is approximately 1 yard.

Thank you, all. I am learning, slowly but surely, especially to be more observant when shopping !

A "bolt" is in the "some" category.

If buying a "bolt" of something - ask how much is on it.
