Default What's the difference between minky and fleece

Is there a difference between minky and fleece for quilt backing...is minky a brand name?

You might google minky vs fleece. There is a big difference in the texture and look.

And there is a big difference in what we call "minky." The best "minky" I've seen is a Shannon Fabric called Cuddle. It is usually about $16.99 for a yard 60" wide. It is a wonderful fabric.

Many years ago it was called velour [with no bumps].

Cuddle fabric doesn't feel like velour. It has a higher pile and is much softer.

We had a little girl in the store who LOVED minky (Shannon Cuddle). She put a bolt of it on the floor and laid her head on it. Then she took off her shoes and ran her toes through the bolts on the low shelf. I wish I had got a picture.

This is my favorite minky. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/30680841191281142/ It is soooo incredibly soft!

Minky is a lot harder to sew than fleece. Minky is way more slippery and had to handle.

They are both polyester fabrics. However, fleece is double sided with texture and print on both sides, while Minky/Cuddle fabric is single sided with a plusher, almost furlike feel. A lot of fleeces I have seen can just simply be cut to the size desired (i.e. lap size), bound and used as is, while Minky/Cuddle needs to be made into something with some kind of a lining and/or backing.
