I think you might find a lot of different answers to your question but I do believe a lot will say paducah quilt show.

Quilting by the Lake in upstate New York

http://www.quiltingbythelake.com

2 weeks late July. 2010 just finished.
Fabulous quilt show - all the instructors have quilts hanging; interesting, varied vendors; classes with well-known national and international instructors.
I began going in the late 80s thru early 2000s.
It's expensive to attend but cost nothing to see the exhibit and shop the vendors

When I lived in California I really liked the Road to California quilt show in the LA area and the Glendale quilt show (near Burbank, CA).

Now that I'm in Texas, I've also found great classes at the Houston quilt show.

I've not been to Paducah, but I may check it out based on the comments on this thread!

I just found this website... there is a bar at the top where you can click for shows, shops, and etc by state.

http://www.wrbqinc.com/index.php

Hope this helps! :D

I was in Denver on business a couple of years ago and attended the Denver Quilt Show. The show was fantastic, I met so many wonderful people, and fell in love with quilting all over again. I actually had to buy another suitcase to bring home all of my treasures. If you ever get a chance to attend, it is well worth it. Kathy
