In the washing machine. I use a concentrate and starch all of my fabric at once.

I lay it out on my dining room table, spray starch the back, iron the front.

I bought some spray stuff at my LQS, you use instead of regular starch, I forgot the name of it, but has anyone else used it? its kind of pricey, but I thought I would try it. Regular starch leaves such a bad residue on the fabric so I thought I would try this stuff. I think its new.

A Steady Betty is a special ironing surface - it "grips " the fabric to hold it while you press it. Available in 12"x12"
They also sell grippers to put under your foot pedal. Google "what is a steady betty" to get to the website.

dh installed a couple kitchen cabinets w/a countertop in my studio... i toss an old towel on that & starch away...if i'm working with a light fabric, i use one of those white towels you can buy to embroider... cause the dark towel sometimes leave lint on my fabric... and it irks me...

When? Every time I start a new quilt. Before I even think about cutting the fabric I starch it, ALOT! I went through two cans on 12 yards of fabric this morning. Yes I use ALOT of starch. and if ya want the truth its still not as stiff as I would like. After it is sprayed I fold it up and let it sit for awhile. If I have time I will iron it damp with a dry iron until it is dry. However. I am really impatient so I normally hang the wet fabric over something with a fan on it so it drys faster and then I turn the steam on when I iron!

I myself think it is easier to accurately cut fabric that has been starched really well. However I am sure there are quilters out there who cute more accurately than myself without any starch at all.

I'll stick to starching my fabric!
