If you have the pattern, yes, you are permitted, even expected to make the pattern, in any colors you choose. What would be in violation of a copyright would be making a copy of the printed pattern. And only the copyright owner has the right to display the printed pattern publicly, or create another item (pattern) based upon it. You may sell your copy of the printed pattern, or give it away. You just can't make a copy of it.

Of course you can copy her colors - it is flattering to the original maker and after all, that's what kits are made up to do. Working from recommended colors will enhance your color sense and before you know it you will be making your own color choices. The easiest way to choose colors is to pick a print you like with several colors in it then go find fabrics that match those colors. Let the professionals who made the original print guide you! Good luck with your table runner and remember to post photos when you are doone - we LOVE to have show and tell!

I copy color choices and fabrics from other quilts whenever I want to. I haven't lost any sleep over it. Most times I'll search the internet for quilt pictures to find color choices I like.

Just how many truly 'original' combinations are out there now?

I think the number is probably close to zero.

It's called taking inspiration from something that you have seen.

Yes, it's ok, we all look on here for ideas. I usually just mention who I got my inspiration from when I post my quilt.

Mimicry is the highest form of flattery. I am sure she would be pleased.

My first thought was how many colors would go with a pariotic quilt?? Red, white and blue. But then I've seen many which were titled patriotic that were every color in the book. Who knew!

What a person considers "patriotic colors" would probably depend on what country that person is from!?!?
