Default Need Help with Paper-piecing Project

I have tried and tried to figure out how to piece this block. My local quilting friends take one look and say - paper piece? Yikes!! There will definitely be people here who know how to do this and I'm hoping that my explanation makes sense. Then, I'll do my best to understand what you're saying.

Here's a picture of the block I am trying to piece. The dresdan fan tip doesn't work because the points are all different. I can't figure out how to number it for PPing. How is this block possible?

Oh, my, looking at it, I immediately thought 'applique' - don't see how to pp unless you piece every section of the background as you make the points - maybe someone else has a better idea?

I would not pp either. I would cut templates of each pedal out of freezer paper, iron the seam allowance of the tips to the back and then sew the pedals together. Then I would applique it to the background fabric.
Hope this makes sense.

In maryjanesfarm the dresden plate is made from equal sized pieces. In this block her pieces are individually sized. Unless her block is copied wrong, the two blocks are different. It can't be a traditional DP pattern when finished with individually sized pieces.

Sure, it can be paper pieced. but each blade has to be a separate section. I'm not a real paper piecer, so someone may want to check my numbering, but this is what I came up with.

I think you got the formula right Nan, however, I can't imagine the bulk in the lower right corner. How would you deal with that corner? Even if you appliqued as suggested above, the bulk would still be there, wouldn't it?

QuiltnNan you got it right! Even if this was appliqued there would still be the bulk at the intersecting seams. That 's why on so may of these style have a circle in the middle.

You gals are right about the bulk. How about adding a triangle to the bottom right. then if you put four blocks together, that triangle will make a diamond shape
