I am always reading and somewhere I saw a quilt made out of the little dainty flowered hankies ladies used to use. It had the hankerchiefs made into butterflies and then stitched onto a top. Does anyone know how to make it or has anyone ever made one?

I remember that about 10 years ago one of the fabric companies had a fabric that was preprinted 'hankies' on yardage. Some had scalloped edges but they were on square backgrounds so that they could be cut out in blocks and pieced, or cut out into scallops and appliqued. Very pretty and it sold well for us.

Watch the magazines in your LQS usually one of them has this pattern sometime within the year. It varies which one will show it but it's usually there sometime during the year.

Yes, it was about 10 years ago that that fabric came out. Believe it or not, I have it, the coordinating print and the scalloped edging still waiting to be made.

They're beautiful. Seems to me if you don't have a source for the vintage hankies, these would work with any square of fancy fabric, just fold, pin and overstitch the edges to applique them on your backing.

There are several books on handkerchief quilts. I have them and old hankies, but haven't made the quilts yet. I am going to take a class at the Road to California show in Jan 2011 that is held in Ontario, CA about making small wall hangings out of hankies. The teacher is Cindy Brick www.cindybrick.com. I can hardly wait.
