Why do so many people seem so focused on buying fat quarters? I do scrappy quilts--and will continue to do them, with scraps, mostly, not purchased fat quarters.

So, I'm wondering, what do you all do with your fat quarters? Do you buy more than one of the same, and if so, why not just buy 1/2 yard or more of yardage?
I have many FQ because I use them for turning Twenty Quilts or I make ,I call them Turning 10s or even turning 5. They are so fun to use. I might have close to 200 of them. I make a FQ out of scraps from a quilt too.

I only buy them if they are really cheap then I use them for
scrap quilts.

I also make some small items such as luggage tags, passport wallets, table runners, doll quilts, miniature quilts, etc. Fat quarters are more than enough for most of those.

I also buy fat quarters to use as "zingers", something for added interest or to get your attention. I LOVE fabrics with metallic gold trim, sparkly stuff, wild prints, crazy color combinations, etc, that you would only want a little bit of in your quilt.

I agree for appliques. FQ have a whole 'nother use!

Loved all the photos of the scrappy quilts. I buy both yardage and fat quarters - always find a use for both.

I could never do much with a FQ (IMO) so I quit using them and just buy yardage.

I figured the price of fat quarters for a yard also.....too expensive for me so I just buy yardage.

I use FQ's for foundation piecing. When making a pillow cover they are just the right amount to use for the paper pieced portion of the pillow. That way I don't have a lot of material left over that I might never get around to using for anything else.

I buy fat quarters for alot of reasons listed here. Its easier to get alot of different styles within a color range so that scrappy quilts have even more personality. I also like them because you can do applique or paper piecing and not mess up yardage for a small piece. I also have several patterns from magazines and books that use only fat quarters for various quilts. Sometimes you just love a fabric but you can't find it on the bolt so you just take a taste of it for your stash.
