depends on your fabric for the border. If a border printed fabric, then it looks better to mitre and take advantage of the prints. If solids or background type fabrics, then it probably won't make much difference other than the eye will see the corners and mitre might look more finished.

If you do mitre border then the mitre in the binding should align with the seam on the border.

If you don't miter the corners then how do you do them? I don't usually get mine perfect, so if alot of you don't do it at all I would love to know what you do with the corners!

ljwinemiller, sometimes I put the borders on the sides, then across the top.

Sometimes, like the quilt I'm working on now, I'm putting cornerstones on the corner, matching smaller corner stones in the sashing.

I save the miter for the prints like Holice mentioned.

I only miter if I want my quilt to look a little more "dressy". I lean toward scrappy and they need "straight". :-) :-)

It depends if you do not want to have a break in the pattern as you go around the corner - so that the entire design is framing the quilt. Some designs, such as a rope or floral pattern, look better if mitred. I also think you should have this technique in your skill set so that your designing possibilities are not limited.

I miter some and don't others and I am Mennonite. Who knows. The fabric I cut away when I miter is used elsewhere so is not really a waste.

It all depends on the look you wish to achieve. If you are using stripes it looks so much better.

Like many others have said already, I also don't always mitre my corners on the quilts I make as it really depends on the look I am after and the pattern of the fabric I used in the border.

I also keep my corners in the scrap basket for "one day use" however I hate doing triangles and so that day ...
