As I see this quite often, I am wondering why people make the mug rugs in a rectangular shape? Is it just to show a particular pattern??? I have wondered that since a coaster is typically a square.

Thanks in advance for explaining this!

I think it is because they are meant to hold a snack beside the mug!

A snack, or a spoon. I've Also seen many where there's a pocket for a teabag. There's no real pattern, you can make them any shape you like. I have some left over hexagonal blocks I was going to use.

Because if it were square....it would be called a coaster!

(I don't know the real reason either!)

How about this one. You don't really need a pattern. Saw it online somewhere.

It is made to hold a snack or something besides your cup.
