Default Wool applique

For those who do wool appliqué: do you layer one piece on top of each other, or do you cut out the underneath so it’s not so thick? For instance, I’m doing a bird and the wing is on top of its body-do you cut out under the wing, or just lay it on top of the body? I hope I explained what I mean!! Thanks

It depends on how many layers I will end up with a the end. If it's a wing on a bird on a nest on a tree...I flip them over and remove the bulk. Jus a wing on a bird on the back ground probably not.
