I have a Brocade fabric that I bought a while ago, and would like to make something out of it. I would like to know if anyone has ever used this to make a quilt, and what fabrics would work well with it? It's a cream/peachy type color with dragonflies on it, and has a bit of shimmer to it. I would love to machine embroider some designs to go on the quilt, but don't know what type of fabric would go well with a brocade? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Oh, and I'm not an experienced quilter, have only been doing this for about 3 years. Still have plenty to learn! LOL

I can't help you, however, this reminds me I have some brocade that is about 40 years old and needs to be used. I'm wondering about a wall hanging or crazy quilting. Would a spray adhesive, to keep it from moving to cut, stain the fabric?

Question one: Is it washable? dry clean only? can you test some in the machine? a quilt for use has to be able to be cleaned so I would check that before you start cutting and sewing. It would be horrible to spend so much time, use it and then.. find it cant be washed. Wall hangings are totally safe, table runners, etc. I still only use like with like fabrics. I know crazy quilts have everything under the sun in them and they are fine of course everyone hand washed everything in the olden days. This old gal prefers not to hand wash anything if at all possible. I love brocades they are so rich on the eye.. the slight shimmer is absolutely enjoyable.

I'm not sure about spray adhesive. Since I've never used it, I don't know if it will stain the fabric.

Hmm... that's a tough one. I know I got it on clearance at Joann's. I would have to double check because I'm assuming that since it was with the other brocades it can be washable. I check for sure. And I do understand about doing all the cutting and all the work, and then it would be all a waste.

I would cut a strip off of it, wash and dry a portion of it and compare it to the unwashed fabric first.
Then I would sandwich a portion of the strip with batting/cotton and batting/flannel and/or batting and another type of fabric and see how they feel after quilting. This way you know before you make too many decisions/purchases what you will end up with :D:D:D

Thank you Amma, that is a very good idea. I'll see if I can do those tests later this evening after dinner is done. :-) I'll post my results as they become available.

Isn't brocade heavy. I would be careful what I used it in.
