I have made 2 D9P quilts using charm packs but I wanted to try making one with just 3 fabrics but I don't know how to figure how much of each fabric I will need to make 12 D9P blocks using 5" squares.

Also is there a strip piecing method to this? I have a migraine right at the moment so I am having a hard time thinking it out!

Thanks so much!

how big do you want the finished blocks to be, and the finished quilt?
I can whip it up in EQ for you I think, as it basically is just a 9 patch quilt, then you will sub cut it right? so no extra fabric once it is cut...just borders...shoot me some numbers!

Jacquie, the finished blocks would be 12". Finished quilt size should be something around 45" x 55".

Yes, basic 9 patch then sub cut and borders. Not sure how big on the borders, maybe a 1" then 3". Whatever is needed to get it close to the finished size. I usually just fly by the seat of my pants!

Thank you so much!

ok you say 3 colors, like four corners are one color, the four middles are one color and center is a third color?

If so, you will make 12 blocks that measure 13" before you sub cut them to get a 12" finished D9P block!

for each fabric you need 1 yard and if you use the center patch fabric for a 3" border you will need to add 1/2 yard to that one.

You will be cutting 4 1/2" strips, and you can sew them into sets of color 1, color 2, color 1 as a set and then color 2, color 3(center) color 2 as a set, you will more sets of the first combo than the second of course.

the total size would be 45 x 58! with a single 3" border!

you can do 5" strips, but the blocks will be bigger!

I hope this helps!

Isn't EQ the best !?! I'd love to see a photo when you get it made up.
