AUGUST - Scrappy Block Swap – SCRAPPY TRIPS
#31
Here is my first one. I used 60 wt. thread with 1/4" seam using the Angler2. The Angler 2 helps me keep a straight seam and you can do a lot of other thing with it. You don't have to pin just keep your fabric lined up together and sew, you can do HST too. When you use The Angler 2 stay on the inside of your black line.
Hope this can help someone. Look forward to see lot of BLOCKS.

*Laughing at myself* It seems that my scant 1/4 inch was a bit too scant. Once i pressed the rows, they were considerably longer than 12 1/2 inches! I set those aside and stitched together a second set of 16 inch strips, cut them and pressed them. They were sewn with a less scant seam and am right on the mark, so far. I've only sewn 4 rows together as i was getting a bit bleary-eyed. i won't be able to stitch until next week now so it will just have to wait. maybe i can salvage the first block by ripping the two worst "scant" seams in each row and save it for myself. We'll see. Despite my mistakes, it's quite fun! i believe i'm going to love making these blocks.

Okay, I tried making a block "tube-style" as per the instructions, and my accuracy suffered big-time. I'm sure it's just "me", though, because that method has always thrown me for a loop (pun intended).
I'm going to try making one with individual 2-1/2" squares and see if it turns out any better. That's how I'm used to doing it, even though it's probably the hard/slower way.

Here's an update:
1. SheriR
2. Purplecat – 6 sets
3. Janice McC – 4 (maybe more) sets
4. Juanita Bean – 6 sets
5. Grannyrosie – 6 sets
6. Jaba – 6? Sets
7. Mariposa
8. Havplenty - ? sets
As I've told a few already, my mock up block came out 12" unfinished. 1/2" too small. All things considered, I still like the block and will keep at it. As Janice mentioned, I might try re-constructing my block.
Love the enthusiasm everyone!!!

Yay! Cutting individual 2-1/2" squares worked out much better for me. The colors are a little brighter in person, but here's the first block, made from scraps in my scrap bag. I'm off to cut more squares. I'd bought some Moda scrap bags a few months ago, and they'll work out really well for this.

Here's my first block. Maybe I read all y'all's directions wrong, but it measures nearly 13" square. I cut my strips a thread larger than 2.5" and sewed with a scant 1/4". I think my next set I'll forget the scant 1/4" and hope that helps.
I had a really hard time picking fabric. I finally threw all the FQ's I collected into a bag and made my husband pick out 18. He kept saying, "You do it." But I told him I can't. I know how the different ones feel!!! My blocks will all have a polka dot, a stripe, and a neutral, plus three "surprise" fabrics. I was cutting for the fq swap and had enough to use some for these. Hense the polka dot and stripe. Hope that's ok.

SheriR, when I cut a scant larger for the strips, I sewed a full 1/4" seam. Seems like with my machine they are nicer to get laying flat and no "bumps". Sorry I didn't add that so you knew. Your block looks great!!! Leaving for the weekend wedding soon so will check in on Monday. Just taking the tablet with me and not the laptop....it might be an experience I will never do again, but if I can't post I can still read all the comments and get e-mail. Have a great weekend ladies.
Notice my new avatar, it's the "Quilt for Quilters" swap and this is my beauty from Dabbler312. Autumn batiks and a tan colored minky back....had to show it off, I love it so much!
