Can we put something that will tie them all together.... like maybe they should all be on a similar background fabric (say, cream, or something neutral), or something along those lines?

Good idea Blue. If they are all applique, we could state a background color. I supposed pieced and paper pieced blocks still sort of have a background color. We will await Ms. BRT's decision.

Gee, Dizzy, am I that predictable? Of course, I've been looking at Sunbonnet Sam the farmer patterns! :D

Good Morning!

moosegirl- Cows are already taken. If you wait, and we reach 12, you could do one of the "duplicates," however, until then, would you like to do something else?

***
Tying the blocks together is a great idea! I love the idea of using cream or off white as a "background." However, not everyone will be doing applique. (Nor do I think we ought to limit the swap to applique.) Should we take the idea of tying the quilt together a tad bit further? Limit the colors to all "earth tones," rather than jewel tones? I'll add a picture or two for an example. I did a search on farm fabrics to see what would be available for use to work with, and it seems they fall into "earth tones" or "jewel tones." What do you think? We're all in the planning stage, so we might as well work the kinks out now! Which of the two styles, below, do you think is more appropriate for everyone to strive for?

(Yes, blue/purple/orange all have "earth tone" varieties, so sayth the art teacher. For instance, think of denim. Denim is a "earthy" blue. We have to have a blue something for our Blue Chicken.)

Do we need to do 12 blocks of the same animal/scene/etc. for a set?

I'm ok with cream or off white as the base color. Earth tones sounds fine too., but I'm pretty lousy with colors so I may need help.

I've found a cute Sunbonnet Sam holding a rake pattern if everyone can live with that. I had been thinking of giving him a red shirt. Is red an earth tone if it's more bricky and less Christmasy?

NorBanaquilts, I have you down for a sun!

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter, Exactly! "Brick" red is an earth tone, while a "true" red is more a jewel tone.

I don't want anyone stressing about whether or not a color is or is not a true earth tone shade. That takes the fun out of it. Just attempt to keep your colors muted and more earthy, and less "cartoon" like. That does not mean, however, you can't do "cute" things! We're going, I am assuming, for more of a muted pallet, so the blocks all tie together. Does this sound good for everyone?

sewjoyce- Yes, 12 blocks make up one "set." You will receive 12 blocks back, including one of your own. You may do as many sets of 12 as you want. This could mean all of the blocks you submit, 24 for example, are the same- OR- you could do two sets of two different patterns. Did I make this more confusing than it had to be? Probably. lol.

All the chickens were so great and some of them were downright hilarious. Can we do that kind of design?
