January 2018 - Paper Pieced Kaleidoscope block swap

Welcome to our Paper Pieced Kaleidoscope block swap. We will be making 6 1/2" unfinished blocks using the free pattern and template from Quilters Cache:

    http://www.quilterscache.com/images4...oscopetemp.gif

The template and instructions will make one kaleidoscope block measuring 6 1/2" unfinished.

Please print out lots of copies of the template as we will be making lots and lots of Kaleidoscope quilt blocks!!

If you look online you'll see that the success of these quilts depends on High Contrast. Let's step it up a little bit for this swap and each make 4 sets (32 blocks - 16 light/dark and 16 dark/light).

Each swapper may decide paper on/paper off - either one is fine. Each swapper may use whatever mailing method is most cost-effective as long as you make sure to pay for return postage.

I encourage each swapper to use a variety of different fabrics in your various kaleidoscope blocks. Each block is to have a max of 3 different fabrics; one light, one dark and light/neutral corners. The picture below is an example.

    Please PM me with:

    Your screen name
    Your real name
    Address/city/state/zip

Our mailing deadline will be Friday February 23, 2018. This will allow all of us plenty of time to finish and mail our blocks. Please use whatever mailing method is most cost effective for you as long as you include/pay for return postage. ((or pay for the postage and put it on your return envelope)). It depends on what your PO will allow you to do. Please Label Your Quilt Blocks. Any blocks not labeled will be returned unswapped.

This is going to be loads of fun! Let's Go!!

Good morning and a Happy, Healthy, Productive New Year to all of us!!
I'm in, at first I was worried, 32 is a lot. Saw 2 months and breathed a sigh of relief, I will start as soon as I make more copies.

If this swap is a go, I will do 32. They go together much faster than you think they would.

I hope to see lots of swappers this month. Please note I have allowed lots of time since I 'upped the ante'. Who's up for the challenge??

Armylady - it's easier than you might think and this is a pretty easy quilt block. Hope you'll consider joining in on the swap.

Let's see if we can get at least 2 more people by Friday Jan 12th. If yes, then we'll be 'full steam ahead'.

This pic shows how the blocks should be, to get the optical illusion of overall circles. I don't understand where the third color of "neutral corners" comes in. I feel that will mess up the illusion. Shouldn't they be two fabrics, light and dark, as shown in this illustration?

    Hi there, Sewbizgirl -

Happy New Year to you. In this swap, we're using a max of fabrics. Two fabrics - 1 light & 1 dark are just fine and if you want, you may use a 3rd light/neutral fabric for the corners. ((max 3 fabrics per block)).

I'll post a picture of an example using light/neutral prints in the corners - the same one I posted last month but that's fine.

Ok, thanks Jane. I thought you might have made some changes since last time you offered it but I see the design will be basically the same. Thank you for answering my question. And Happy New Year to you, too!

I think one of the reasons that the circle design does not show up very well on the example picture that Jane posted is because of the neutral corners. In this day and age (especially with Bonnie Hunter's definition of 'neutral'), neutral can mean different things to different quilters. Jane's picture indicates a very modern approach to neutral for the choice of fabric for the corner pieces of the blocks. If you change the neutral corners to a fabric that is very pale and does not draw attention to itself, like for example, solid white fabric, then you will see the circle pattern emerge more readily. I came across this picture today, and thought I would show what a difference it makes when the corners are all white for all the blocks!

OK, group. Here's who we have. A great group, indeed, however not quite as big as I had hoped for. If we go ahead with the swap with 5 people with each of us making 32 blocks (16 light/dark and 16 dark/light) then we will each receive 5 to 6 blocks from the same person. So - - - what does the group want to do??

Please chime in and let me know.
