Welcome Ukinusa...I'm sure you will enjoy it. I thought I had my wall hanging done....but am re-thinking it. I'm going to have bunches and bunches of 'they weren't quite good enough' wall hangings lying around the house! Oh well......

Hey everyone! Sorry haven't been on the Q for awhile. I will catch up with you all name wise and list who is playing.
How is everyone surviving? We have been quarantined for going on 5 weeks now. My husband is a cancer survivor just last summer he had a sarcoma taken off his arm. and he did radiation treatments last Sept. I have a lung disease and am on oxygen now so I gave in to my kids request we stay home. Our Daughter Sara has been getting us groceries but I have been exploring ordering on line so she doesn't need to go as often. All 3 of my kids make sure we are ok.
Just ran to town to get meds and mexican food LOL We've gotten out and done drive through chicken and McDs a few times but not many. Mostly just staying home and avoiding everyone.
I haven't gotten on the mask band wagon but thought maybe I would help out a friend of mine who is house bound with 2 aides who come in to her home. One aide works at the local hosp. So they don't have masks.
so I am trying to answer some questions on the mask making. - Yes I have cotton cloth LOL yes I have thread. But if it has to be 100% cotton thread I'm not sure. Does cotton over polyester work or not? I have at least on spool of 100% cotton thread but most of it is polyester. so what is ok to use?
One comment says to not use a nose piece so they can mike the mask to disinfect it. But most are putting in a nose piece., I have a lot of paper clips I can use.
I have some lightweight pellon but it won't last long. I also had my mom scrounge some unused furnace filters. are there specific dos and dont's on the filters?
So many saying so many different things about the masks. It is confusing. I don't want to put my time and trouble into something that does not end up helping anyone.
I posted on the regular fb and realized you guys would probably know what I want to know. I did read the CDC update but it didn't really help much. Thanks! R

I’m glad you and your hubby are staying in. We are staying in also and my step daughter picked up our groceries today. It was so nice of her.
I try to use batik or a quilt shop cotton since it is woven tighter. Usually I use Guterman poly thread since that is what I have on hand all the time. The pattern I’ve been using is from the Button Counters website. It’s the one that Cleveland Clinic has requested so I’ve been doing some for them. It’s a pleated pattern. When I do them for my family I’ve used a layer of featherweight interfacing on one half of the mask so I have 3 layers total and I sew a small dart in the top and bottom centered when I am all done so it fits at the nose and chin a little better, maybe 1/4” in and 3/4” down. That way you can tell which side goes towards your face so you don’t put it on backwards when it could be contaminated. Saw
that on Suzy Quilts website.
Anyway I will be checking to see what the other girls on here are doing and what little hints they are using.

Hi, ladies...so glad you'all are staying in and avoiding trips. It's so cool that family has your back the way they do. My family is doing the same for our mothers. We just want them to stay put.. We video chat with them everyday and call them every evening. Both are homebodies anyway so it really isn't much difference for them; however, we are not entering their homes so human contact is minimal. I want to hug them...ugh!
I follow Fat Quarter Shop pattern from their blog. It's the pleated pattern...no nose piece and has a pocket to insert a filer if desired. I started out making ties until the elastic came then switched. I, too, skaduzy, use batiks and quilt cotton because of the tight weave. I've made a bunch for family and the senior homes in my valley, given them to grocery store people, mail carriers and post office personnel. We have low cases in my state still so hospitals in my region have not requested any. Mostly, senior homes. I've made a bunch for small children because those sizes are hard to find. The pattern has 5 different sizes. I use cotton thread just because that is what I have mostly. I don't use interfacing because it's hard to breath over time with 3 layers. I'd avoid furnace and vacuum filters. There are chemicals in those. I've stopped production for now until I'm contacted to fill a need.
There are so many different patterns to chose from and a gazillion suggestions on the COVID19 thread but anything is better then nothing. I'm told that many medical,personal use the cloth masks to cover N95 masks to preserve them but I'm sure they appreciate any made and donated.

I am home but in our large family 5 are working. I made masks and made some with ties. Poly cotton thread works just fine. As for the nose piece, it all depends on the nose. I made a very small dart for myself and some of the boys but I have one son and daughter that do better with nothing. They have a round flat nose. Hubby's nose sticks out and he prefers a home made piece of metal that he clips on to the mask. He also wears glasses so the condense is very annoying if he can not get it thight around his nose. Some patterns I made have a pouch for a filter, like coffee filter. We all prefer 2 layers of quilting fabric and no filter. I am concerned about furnace filters as many contain asbestos. Best to make pouches and people can add their own filter is they want one. My boys prefer a simple mask with quarter inch elastic around the ears and 2 layers quilting fabric accordian style for the mask.

Am i the first to post their wall hanging? I decided i didn't care for the one I had previously made...so went back to the drawing board. I saw a layout like this on pinterest and decided I liked it. Will anyone of you ladies like it too??????.

Oh...that turned out so pretty, granky... I love the layout. Your quilting is wonderful, too. Well done!
I just finished a quilt top so I will be working on my wall hanging next. It's all laid out...just need to sew it up and see if I like it.

Every swap I think I need to make something and join in. Maybe this time I will. We'll see. I have more time at home now! LOL I haven't made anything in well over a year. I made a few masks for a friend this last week and working on a few for a cousin. It was frustrating. Everything I did was backwards or the needle broke twice or stitches were skipping and It was like am I really supposed to do this project or not??? It took me awhile to get back into the hang of things. I had to switch machines cause my one Brother has a problem with skipping stitches. Maybe now I can work on something quilty again.
