Batik Block Sampler ~~ Sign-ups Close May 30th, 2012 ~~

Whose Ready for some Batik Fun??? Are you ready to make a beautiful Batik Sampler?

Before joining, please read Rules for Swaps and Similar Activities, which you will find at the top of the list of swaps.

Description:

12-1/2 inches UNFINISHED Batik Sampler Blocks

Please use only 100% cotton batiks, pre-washed (required) and before mailing your blocks, please square and measure them to be sure they measure 12-1/2 inches square. Please watch any points to make sure they have a ¼” seam allowance.

You make 12 blocks, all in the same pattern and fabrics. If you want to make multiple sets, just make sure you have 12 blocks of each pattern, and use a different pattern and fabrics from each set of 12. You will receive back as many as you send.

- ANY 12" finished block (12.5" at time of mailing cause the 1/2" is your seam allowances) block pattern will work!

- You make a set of 12 blocks out of the SAME pattern, but you can use ANY Batik fabrics to make your blocks.

Send in all 12 of your blocks, and I will send you back one of your blocks and one each of 11 different blocks.

This swap is open to all experience levels.

Please check blocks before sending to ensure the following:
*Use 100% pre-washed cotton fabrics.
*Seam allowances should be 1/4". Blocks to be constructed to survive machine washing and drying.
*Measure carefully to ensure blocks are a correct size.
*All applique blocks MUST have all pieces sewn down in some manner, and survive machine washing/drying.

Please understand that I will have no choice but to return blocks that are not a right size, or not constructed to survive machine washing and drying, etc.

By the mailing deadline, send the blocks in a gallon size ziplock baggie to me along with $5.30 in postage stamps for Priority Mail, or if you want Delivery Confirmation on your Priority Mail package please send $6.05 in stamps. Please be sure to include adequate postage. Include with your blocks in the baggie, a slip of paper with your name and exact mailing address written neatly to mail your blocks back home.

Please mark each one of your blocks with a slip of paper pinned to each block, or alternatively a sticky label, including your screen name. Your real name and/or location are optional. Please do not package the individual blocks in baggies or any other wrapping.

Sign-up closes May 30, 2012, but if necessary due to high enrollment, it may close earlier.

The mailing deadline to have the blocks to me is June 15, 2012.

I will mail the blocks back out approximately July 01, 2012.

To be added to this swap once you have your blocks done, please send a private message to PinkLotus with your screen name, real name, mailing address, and how many sets you will be sending.

Let’s discuss, share pictures, and above all else have some FUN!!!

I'll try to do this one, but I need to catch up on a few things before officially signing up. :) Batiks are my absolute favorite! :D

PinkLotus 04-02-2012 07:29 PM

Sounds great moonrise  I love Batiks to!

sew1096 04-02-2012 08:39 PM

oooh I love Batiks so I'll have to keep this one in mind but I don't want to sign up yet. I have several projects going already. Big surprise huh! :)

MdmSew'n'Sew 04-03-2012 05:46 AM

I have a bin with about 150 different batiks, so this would be right up my alley - but I have to finish my blocks for my BOOM swap before I can sign up for this - would love to make three sets so I would wind up with a queen size quilt for my bed ... of course, I could make 36 different blocks and create my own sampler, but what would be the fun of that? I'd much rather have something that makes me feel like a great big hug from my QB friends everytime I use it! Back to work so I can go home ... so I can finish sewing for the BOOM so I can sign up for this ... it never ends. {sigh}

hoppa 04-03-2012 05:50 AM

If I can get caught up with projects then I will sign up for this one as love batiks

babyfireo4 04-03-2012 06:09 AM

Oh you guys are killing me!!! lol No more swaps! I already caved and joined the magical forest swap, I have to peice 2 tops by the middle of May and bind a gigantic quilt by the 3rd week of April so I can enter it in a show...... but I love batiks..... not enough time....... maybe squeeze it in..... ahhhhhhhhh, again you guys are killing me here lol

dungeonquilter 04-03-2012 06:20 AM

I would love to join, but can make any blocks until after our quilt show May 11 & 12. Would only make one set, as I also have my Boom block to make then as well.

Mariposa 04-03-2012 07:32 AM

This sounds super fun!! I'd better get busy finishing up a few things before I work on some blocks! :)

PinkLotus 04-03-2012 07:48 AM

Yay!! Lots of interest already :) Hope you all can get the things you need done so you can play

Sounds great dungeonquilter and have some fun for me at the quilt show.. lol

Sew Mariposa, sew hehe...

hopetoquilt 04-03-2012 03:08 PM

I will make 2 sets. I will be using the Around the Block with Judy Hopkins book to make: Grecian Square and Railroad Crossing. I am not sure about the color choices yet. I will have them made ASAP and will PM when done. Thanks for running the swap. I am excited about getting the blocks and Batiks are my favorite type of fabrics.

Annaquilts 04-03-2012 06:31 PM

Well I signed up for two sets. I have been waiting for a batik block swap. What a tight time line though. But I got to work it in. (-: Love those batik blocks. Now to find the two fun patterns I want to make.

Mariposa 04-03-2012 07:36 PM

:):):):):)

Annaquilts 04-03-2012 11:50 PM

I already cut all the blocks for one set and am sewing away. I am doing a buck eye block but setting it with the lighter squares to the center. Atleast I think I will do it that way. I think it looks nicer.

QuilterMomma 04-04-2012 01:17 PM

Oh my Annaquilts, you are busy already. You are so on a roll. I will be watching, have to finish my 10 UFOs for April first and my other swaps I have committed to then will look again. Will keep watching though. This could with my other blocks I have, make a nice bed quilt. Seriously looking.

PinkLotus 04-04-2012 05:05 PM

We are off to a great start with sign-ups :D Welcome everyone...

I already have a few patterns swirling around in my head that I want to make.

hopetoquilt 04-04-2012 05:36 PM

I bought 4 beautiful batik fabrics today. Any requirements or recommendations with the washing? I washed them with one of my son's white t-shirts and the white t-shirt is still very white. Good enough? Any other washing recommendations before I start cutting?

PinkLotus 04-04-2012 05:46 PM

Good question hopetoquilt... I would say that if you washed them with a white t-shirt and the shirt is still white that is good, and you are all set.

As to others who are in question about the washing - as the swap requires that all fabrics used must be washed. That was a really good idea that hopetoquilt used - is to wash them with an old white t-shirt (wouldn't want you to ruin a good one), and if the shirt is still white you're good to go. Also, a product called Color Catchers that are found in the laundry section, is a good way to tell. Some colors, like the dark Batiks (reds, dark greens, dark blues, etc.) may need to be washed 2-3 times for all the excess color to run clear. Batiks are especially known for having extra dye in them.

Mariposa 04-04-2012 05:53 PM

*Perhaps also use white vinegar in the rinse** Just an idea~~

Thanks. This is my first block swap and I want to make sure I get it all correct. I absolutely adore batiks and am so excited about the exchange. I found 4 awesome fabrics today and washed them this evening. I will start cutting and piecing tomorrow.

Linda58 04-04-2012 09:33 PM

This sounds like a really fun swap, I love Batiks! Got to check my batiks to see if I have enough to do this swap.

Lady_Paquette 04-05-2012 08:43 AM

so any color, any sample block as long as its a batik? that sounds way cool. I may do this. I'm debating between this one and merry-go-round summer block swap. I might do both though. ^_^

PinkLotus 04-05-2012 12:20 PM

Hope so Linda58 :)

Lady_Paquette, yes, any Batik colors and any 12.5" pattern in sets of 12. If you do more than one set, the fabric and the pattern must be different :)

This one is going to be soooo much fun

Got one set done. The pattern is Antique Tile. I hope to do a second set too, but don't know yet what pattern. :)

moonrise 04-06-2012 01:38 AM

I'll make some Rail Fence blocks. I don't think I've ever made any before! :o It'll use up some of this jelly roll I bought awhile back. At the time, I was a little disappointed that a lot of the strips were virtually identical, but the duplicates will come in handy for this. :)

Note to self: Washing jelly roll strips isn't the most fun in the world. :hunf: ;)

hopetoquilt 04-06-2012 02:21 AM

Moonrise, your blocks look great! Mine will get done on Monday. I have off from work next week.

Annaquilts 04-06-2012 06:40 AM

Moonrise, the antique tiles are stunning. I sure hope I get one in the swap.

Mariposa 04-06-2012 06:45 AM

Pretty blocks, moonrise!

Annaquilts 04-06-2012 06:46 AM

I know I like both too but the merry go round pattern looks a bity scarey to me. I still need to do a sample block. I did do the last two of Deb's swaps including the Dresden plate. I learned how to do a Dresden plate through that and really enjoyed it. I am well under way with the batik blocks, one set done and one partially done. I'd say join both. Hopefully this weekend I can make my sample block for the merry go round swap and see if I can make it.

PinkLotus 04-06-2012 08:34 AM

Moonrise, those are gorgeous!! Love 'em alot! Sorry about washing the jellyroll strips.. If it was another type of fabric other than Batiks I would say just post a note letting the swappers know it was from an unwashed jellyroll, but with it being Batiks they need a washin' :)

So glad moonrise posted a pic of her blocks.. Anyone else feel free to do the same when you get them done - that's part of the fun with the sharing!

I'm with Anna :) Go for both if you can.

Hope everyone is have a great Friday, and I'm off to my sewing lab (what I call my sewing studio) to get some things done..

Quiltbaby 04-07-2012 05:21 AM

I would like to sign up for this one. I have the time now. How do I sign up. Also, you are asking for a block that measure 12.5" each. Do you happen to have some free patterns for that size. All the patterns I have the block measures 12". Or do you have a site you can send me to that would have blocks that are the size you want.

I want to participate sign me up please.

Linda58 04-07-2012 06:11 AM

Your antique tile blocks are beautiful!

moonrise 04-07-2012 07:11 PM

Thanks, ya'll! I've got set #2 well underway. :)

It's a good thing I washed the jelly roll strips. My fingertips were a blue-ish color afterwards, from the dye in the fabric! ;)

Please send me a PM (Private Meassge) with your name, mailing adress, and you email address to sign-up. Click on my screenname where it is green, and it will say Private Message, click that and you can send me this info..

12.5" is the "Unfinished" Size with your 1/4" seam allowances. When you sew the blocks into a quilt they will be 12" "Finished"

Here is a link to Quilters Cache, and with the blocks that will make 12.5" unfinished blocks (12" Finished):

If you are unsure if your blocks will be 12.5" "Unfinished" make a test block first (they will be a 12" finished sized when you sew them into a quilt). Several people have asked about this, and the size is very important! It's a standard 12" "Finished Size".

If you have anymore questions please feel free to ask :)
