If so, I will send out 2 different materials!!

I'm thinking a 3x4 layout to start and add my own if I want to. That would actually be 3 quilts.

Good idea, just not sure there's time for additional blocks since we already make 36.

Mad,
i think she meant if you sent back the scraps each owner could make blocks for the back if they wanted to.

This is going to be a great swap!!

Blockhead 01-02-2010 11:39 AM

Sorry, beginner here. How much fabric does it take to do this? 36 fat eights, plus whatever other fabric is needed to make up the rest of the 36 blocks?

sounds like a lot of fabric is needed, has anyone done the math?

susiequilt 01-02-2010 11:46 AM

You need 4 1/2 yards to cut 36 fat 8ths so you would need about the same to complete the blocks.
Count on about 9 yards of fabric.

kysmommy2 01-02-2010 11:52 AM

It's approx 4 1/2 yards of fabric to get the 36 fat eighths...you will be getting that 11x18 piece to work with to make a 12 1/2 inch block. So not too much more for the block. The great thing is that you would be using just as much fabric if you made the quilt all yourself..this way you get a block from all over! =) yay!

Blockhead
As the ladies previously said it really is not much more than what you would be using if you made the quilt yourself. Only this way you will get blocks from all over and have the opportunity to have fabrics included in your quilt that you may not otherwise have access to.
Hope you will decide to join us :-)

Blockhead 01-02-2010 12:11 PM

Quick on the replies here!!!

As much as I'd like to play, 9 yards is too much right now. It's $20 - $25 per metre here for the nice stuff *ouch* and it could take up to a month to have it shipped from the states.

Have fun ladies and post lots of pics.

LovingIzabella 01-02-2010 12:28 PM

Blockhead,
You can use fabric from your stash-it does not have to be brand new.
I am sorry that you won't be joining us but I understand.

Would sending a block of this (each block is appox 7" x 7"), and a F8 be okay, would I be breaking any rules???

NorBanaquilts 01-02-2010 12:48 PM

It's a brighter in real life!

Would you want it cut up, or a border added to the square?

LovingIzabella 01-02-2010 01:12 PM

Donna,
I don't see why you can't send the block and an F8. I would have no objection.

It would be sewers choice, leave whole or ??????

sandpat 01-02-2010 04:14 PM

I'm just lurking around waiting for you all to post the fabrics that you are sending out. Norbana....that is sooo pretty...I don't know if I could cut it!

anitariddle 01-02-2010 04:16 PM

I want to join. This is my first swap and first time on the board thanks to my friend purplemem!

I was thinking that too, I really wouldn't want them cut up and to take up 7" square out of a 12" square seemed a little stifling to the sewer so I found another piece of fabric in my stash to use. I post a pic of that one soon, it's in the washer now.

LovingIzabella 01-02-2010 04:29 PM

Welcome Anita-happy to have you join us and thanks MJ for sending her in our direction!
Donna if you want to send me the flower I do not mind making you a block, I am sure I could design something to go around the 7" square for you :-)
I am going to post a picture of mine soon.

Welcome to the board! MJ is a real sweetie. You will enjoy this swap, I'm sure. I'm gonna have to lurk this time, but I can't wait to see all the cool blocks being made. This is a fantastic swap idea!

Okay here are my two pictures. I am going to send half of my F8s to half the group and the other half to the other half of the group. The tree is a panel I am going to put in the middle. The white fabric with the circles is what i am sending out to be used as my background fabric. The other panel is also going to be in the middle and the orange fabric to the right will go out as my background fabric. They match really nice in person-the lighting is a bit off here in my house lol

With a preprinted block, we would need permission to change it. The block is already 7X7 - there isn't much left to add as is. Why the F8? I'd say either.

Ninnie 01-02-2010 05:12 PM

You would almost have to cut it up, or just sew plain borders on it, and it's too pretty for that

NorBanaquilts 01-02-2010 05:23 PM

April, That tree is great! I love the bright colors with the black and white. I can think of wonderful blocks to make for that. (hint, hint)

Here is the fabric that I"ll be sending out for the swap. I have a bedroom that has a double bed on the bottom, and a twin bed on top that I'll be making these blocks into quilts for my outdoor theme room.

Let your wild outdoor imaginations explode!

[quote=LovingIzabella]If you add sashing and such you can do a 4 x 4 center and use 2 blocks in the opposite corners top and bottom.

You're getting waaaaay too clever. I just sketched this out and it looks fantastic.

By the way, Connecting Threads is having a sale on their closeout fabric -- its practically free ($2.98/yd) Some prints are pretty good, and there's a lot there than can be used for backs at least.

Ninnie 01-02-2010 06:44 PM

Love your outdoor theme sarasewing!

Catlady 01-02-2010 06:45 PM

I'm sorry I can't do the swap this year. I've got 5 memory
quilts to make for a friend, plus, plus, plus too many other
things to list. :( :(

cjt_mama 01-02-2010 06:57 PM

hmmm, now I have to pick some fabric.. I am torn between some scrappy batiks I have saved up and a green paisley/floral I have a bunch of.. Decisions decisions!

cjt_mama 01-02-2010 06:59 PM

April,
oh my...I love both of those!! I collect fairies actually so the fall fairy was a given for me, but the bright tree is great as well. What line of fabric is the tree from? I have a friend who would adore a quilt from that! lol

you are RIGHT! Connecting Threads has a fantastic sale. So, of course I bought at least $50 to get shipping free. There was a darling cream print with little critter footprints to use for the backing for this outdoor theme. Good lead - thanx.

LovingIzabella 01-02-2010 07:50 PM

Oh I am getting so excited about this swap!! I love the outdoor theme!I do a lot of outdoor themes so I can already envision a block for that fabric.
cjt-
the fabric is from The Hawthorn Fairy Flowers The Estate of Cicely Mary Barker 2008 Used under license to Michael Miller Fabrics LLC DC3986. I got this panel from Hancocks of Paducah for like $3 or $4.
This is sooo exciting!!
Nancy this swap is great for letting your creativity flow! Amazing what you can do with the blocks when you really sit and contemplate!
