Ladies, there has been some interest in starting another Chicken Block swap. We won't be starting it for little while, but I wanted to gather some ideas so we can nail down exactly what we'd like to do.

Brainstorming....we might like to open it to blocks of various sizes...like any size divisable by 6"...??

Blocks could be either rectangular or square..

Blocks could all be a standard size...12.5" (unfinished, as usual)

Sets could be 6...or 12...

We could have an embroidered chicken group and then a pieced chicken group...

Lots of ideas out there....whats your idea?

amma 12-28-2009 09:27 AM

Rectangles sound like fun...The last swap was fun...would love to see another flock of chickens :D:D:D

Grandma Cindy 12-28-2009 11:09 AM

Were the resulting quilts from the last exchange ever posted?

MadQuilter 12-28-2009 01:22 PM

The swap could use the size requirements from a Turning Twenty as the basic options. (Not sure what they are, but there seem to be squares and rectangles.) Whichever there are more of, the other shapes can then be filled in accordingly without having to think of them a lot.

sandpat 12-28-2009 04:39 PM

Martina, that is a good idea.....wouldn't you know, I sold my Turning Twenty instructions on this board...oh...about a year ago.

But ya know....everyone doesn't have to do the same size rectangles or squares....we can vary in size as long as you keep them the size divisiable by say 3"...You can then work easily with the blocks and "fillers".

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 12-28-2009 05:29 PM

I think a variety of block sizes is a great idea. Tie them together as suggested with a "divisible by" requirement and let people go to town.

Quilts with varying sized blocks look great!

sew cornie 12-28-2009 08:35 PM

I love the idea of various sizes. Divisible by 3" sounds good. I'd have to think about separating appliqued vs. paperpieced. Hmmm . . . . Personally I like the idea of all appliqued but I'm a bit biased because I don't paperpiece, and I love applique. But I think a mix could be very nice. Better leave this one up to others to decide.

I was thinking last night...it might even be fun to have "funky" chickens....you know..unexpected colors or patterns for their bodies.....

ritamaew 12-29-2009 08:37 AM

I have been intrigued by the Chicken buffet Pattern for a long time--sorry I do not have link-- funny funky chickens would be fun. Are you saying we swap completed blocks or patterns?
Rita

sandpat 12-29-2009 08:43 AM

Rita...we will swap blocks :-D

adrianlee 12-29-2009 09:21 AM

This sounds lilke fun, but I don't quite understand. Is this fabrics that have chickens on them or is it a quilt block?

nellie 12-29-2009 12:01 PM

hi sandpat what ever you guy decide let me know i'll like to join more chickens :-D

It's a quilt block that can include chicken fabric but doesn't have to. For this swap, the discussion is: Should the block be different size. (That's how I am understanding it anyway).

nellie 12-29-2009 01:15 PM

ok thank you

I think I saw the funky chicken quilt. Looks like fun to make. I don't have the pattern either.

sandpat 12-29-2009 03:57 PM

Here is a link (I hope) to the Chicken Buffet patterns....but we wouldn't necessarily have to do something like that. If ya'll like the "funky chicken" idea...it could be either a whimsical type pattern....or just a chicken block done in fabrics that you might not expect...or colors you might not expect...

We also have ideas thrown up about no specific block size assigned...but must be divisable by say 3"....

Other ideas???? I know we have a wonderfully creative group here.... :D

MadeinMaine 12-29-2009 07:11 PM

I'd love to do more chickens. I have an applique pattern picked out from Fatcatpatterns.com >>the one called "Chicken", maybe in some bright batiks. Certainly are some other very "funky" chickens there, too. I also like the idea of being able to do multiples of 6, instead of multiples of 12.

Thanks, sandpat, for getting this started.

sewbeeit42 12-29-2009 07:17 PM

May I suggest that the group take a look at Sindy Rodenmayer's Fat Cat Patterns as she has some great patterns which she generously makes free to the public.
www.fatcatpatterns.com She has some fun and funky chicken patterns at her site.

sandpat 12-30-2009 05:57 AM

Yes, she does have some great patterns!

So....thoughts are....sets of 6....no set block size (just divisable by 3")...funky chickens???

sew cornie 12-30-2009 02:25 PM

Oooh, I LOVE the idea of funky chickens!! (Jumping up and down with excitement! :-D :D )

Sew Special 01-01-2010 12:24 PM

I LOVE the idea of funky chickens, and I LOVE the idea of divisable by 3" or 6"

sandpat 01-01-2010 04:01 PM

Seems like we are leaning towards a fun, funky chicken swap this time!

Esqmommy 01-02-2010 09:18 AM

Any thoughts on when these chickens might be "hatching"?

sandpat 01-03-2010 06:03 AM

I'm thinking that we should post the sign up today....to close on the 15th Jan....then what do ya'll think of the mail date...March 1? March 15???? Gee, they sound so far away, but it will be here before you know it!

MadeinMaine 01-03-2010 06:19 AM

I vote for March 15th (or even April 1st).
Thanks, sandpat, for coordinating this.

sandpat 01-03-2010 06:29 AM
