Fun & Funky Chickens Block Swap - Sign Ups Close Aug. 30, 2012

Let's hear it for chickens!! Blocks can be regular chickens in normal colors, or a silly chicken in funky fabrics, and anything in between! Use your imagination! Please make blocks that you will be proud to share.

This swap is open to all experience levels.

Nitty Gritty:

*Use good quality 100% cottons that are pre-washed. No muslin, no flannel, no see-throughs, and no poly blends.
Remove selvages before cutting pieces for your blocks. Blocks need to be constructed to survive machine washing and drying.

*Blocks can be any size divisible by 3" (plus 1/4" seam allowances). Ex. 3.5"x3.5", 3.5"x6.5", 6.5"x6.5", 6.5"x9.5",9.5"x9.5", 9.5"x12.5", 12.5"x12.5", 12.5"x15.5", etc.

*Blocks will be in sets of 4. Limit of 6 sets per swapper. (limit of 1 set of 3.5" per swapper)
All 4 blocks per set will be swapped, so if you'd like one of your own, please make an extra!
Please make each set a different design, to help keep things interesting! :)

*All applique pieces MUST be sewn down in some manner. Please, no monofilament thread.

*Embellishments: If they are bulky, please put them in a baggie attached to block if needed.

*Plain pieces of chicken-themed fabrics are great to share with others, as an extra. They will not count towards your block sets. These are fun little fillers! Extras, and not required~

*Blocks should be mailed to me in a ziploc baggie inside an envelope, with your name and board name on each individual block. Delivery Confirmation is highly recommended.

*Return Mailing: You need to include $5.30 in stamps or cash for me to mail your return blocks to you. I will supply a PADDED flat rate envelope. They hold more! Delivery Confirmation is extra $, and highly recommended!

*Sign up deadline is Aug. 30, 2012. Please only sign up when your blocks are done and ready to mail. Blocks need to be "to me" by Sept. 15, 2012. Blocks will be swapped and mailed out by Sept. 30, 2012.

*Please PM me to sign up, and give me # of sets if possible. I wouldn't want to miss you! :)

All general rules for swaps are here: http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-20154-1.htm

Join in!! Let's have fun, share pictures, and chat about our creations! There are lots of chicken block ideas on the internet, and on the board here as well. You can do a search for "funky chickens" and you'll see lots of ideas!

 same here.

My time 05-21-2012 08:08 AM

When you say sets of 4 do you mean in order to participate we must make 4 blocks? Might be a silly question but I nave never entered a quilting board challenge.

Mariposa 05-21-2012 08:31 AM

Hi My Time-- yes, the blocks are done in sets. You do need to make at least 1 set to participate. Each block does not have to be the same pattern, but some folks find it easier to do them the same. You can do different fabric choices also.
If you send me 4 blocks to swap, you will receive 4 blocks from other folks to add to your collection. :)

QuilterMomma 05-21-2012 09:37 AM

Oh, did you put my name in on this one. I have got some ideas that have been waiting for this one. like I need another chicken quilt, but so wanting to do them again. i have two already and a third will just add to the collection. I am so excited. I have some dancing chickens that are going to be so perfect. YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mariposa 05-21-2012 11:39 AM

QMomma- the dancing chickens sound great! :)

SewExtremeSeams 05-21-2012 12:04 PM

rwquilts 05-23-2012 04:59 AM

Ah ha! Mariposa I see you're hosting another fun chicken swap! The last one was super fabulous! I know you'll have lots of happy participants here! I did go a little overboard last time and made about a jillion extra blocks so will likely just be watching and cheering everyone on this time around...but then you never know do you???

Mariposa 05-23-2012 06:39 AM

I am excited, Tam...Moo will be joining in the fun. You are just going to love these blocks. I love all the variety. I have to dig out that chicken fabric hidden in my stash that I have covered up. This is going to be fun.

Why I MUST participate....

We moved to a new home last summer and discovered a small scorpion problem. Everyone in the area says chickens will eat the bugs around the house and even the scorpions SO.....

Hubby ordered 8 chickens that arrived mid February. He's spent the last 5-6 weeks constructing a coop. I painted the egg box lids and letters "EGGS". It's hubby's master piece and his chicks..well they are spoiled. We did have to rename Ginger... George... (The babies call him Nugget..) (so, 7 chicks and a rooster) You see hubby in the picture feeding them corn and teaching them he's a good guy. :D

So SEE I just HAVE to join and make him a fun Funky Chicken throw!!! I'm thinking Texas chick and funky coop and..what do you think of scorpion? The whole reason we got the chicks...

Neesie 05-26-2012 10:10 AM

I don't know about chickens eating scorpions . . . but our neighbors' chickens do a grand job, of keeping the grasshoppers under control.

SewExtremeSeams 05-26-2012 03:02 PM

Welcome to this swap Sheri! LOL, George and his girls are more than spoiled. My goodness!

I am curious though... are you feeding them the scorpions or are you going to let them run loose to keep the scorpion population down?

We have 8 chickens running loose since last fall after harvest, so they can keep the bug population down. We were quite infested with earwigs last year. Haven't seen one yet. But! Now that we are out a lot those chickens are going to have to go to their pens until after harvest again. Too much chicken dew everywhere like the decks, front porch, front sidewalks, etc. They are hilarious though. We feed our dog on our back porch and everymorning those hens are after his dog food. LOL

Love your chicken coop.

Pink Lady 05-26-2012 03:19 PM

I can tell you Chickens will eat anything and the great thing is the eggs you get in return. I also am thinking of joining this swap it sounds like fun. You can check out this web site for info on scorpions and a small piece on chickens:)

Love your coop

http://www.thebestcontrol.com/bugsto..._scorpions.htm

According to this they are good controls for scorpions.

SheriR 05-26-2012 08:55 PM

Gosh ladies thank you for the pest info. I'm sending it all hubby's way. He's in charge of bug control.

Linda, as soon as there's no way for the babes to escape they'll get to roam the yard. I'm guessing sometime next week.

I'm excited for this swap. I looked at the past ones and got fun ideas. I promise though.... No scorpions. :D

Thought maybe some of you would like a few photos for inspiration! You might think I am crazy :D but that is ok. I snapped a few photos while out enjoying my young chickens. We have white crowned black bantams, white silkies and a variety of others. Oh, the last photo is the girl showin' off her nails. :D:D She certainly doesn't need knox gelatin to make it long and strong. :D :D :D

Mariposa 05-28-2012 01:12 PM

SewExtreme-- terrific pics! :)

rwquilts 05-29-2012 05:49 AM

Linda, I LOVE your life sized models! Great inspiration. Dig that toe job! :)

catmcclure 05-29-2012 08:24 AM

Nope, I've been downloading her patterns for several years. I have them all. I guess I'll sign up for this.

QuilterMomma 05-30-2012 09:07 AM

Oh my, if I put chickens in my backyard, my toy poodle boy would go banannas. We have a bird's nest in the eve of our home who has babies now. They drive the dog crazy. Thanks for the FYI on chickens ladies. Great photos.

SewExtremeSeams 05-30-2012 10:28 AM

Yipppeeeee... 18 two day old chicks arrived at our post office today for us to pick up. Lots of chirping all the way home in their little box. They are sooooo cute! :D

We are up to 14 chickens now. We adopted 6 more babies this spring. I LOVE them.
Here's a picture of DD with her best friend Chloe.:)

QuilterMomma 05-30-2012 12:26 PM

Oh my goodness Ms. Grace, those are adorable.

Ms Grace 05-30-2012 12:29 PM

She is a Silkie. They stay small.
She lays very little eggs. About half size as a normal hen.
She is full grown, over 1 year old now.

Ms. Grace, don't you just love those white silkies? We have four, at least one being a rooster. I love watching their hair move in the wind. :)
