Ok for you U.S. that have sent internationally. What is the best way to do so. I went to postal today to get PR boxes to use.... one for U.S. and the other international... however there is a big difference in cost. U.S. for that box is $12 and some change and if sent internationally its $59 and some change. I'd rather just put the money in an envelope and send it to the SP than waste that much on postage. Money is NOT an issue with me however I also don't like to squander it on postage a whole lot more than what I'd be sending them dollar wise.
What method do y'all send internationally. Postal lady suggested I don't use a PR box and use a padded envelope and bring it in and it will be a whole lot cheaper. I'm afraid I don't mail often except for swaps I might join so this is all new to me. I've had several international swap partners over the past year - I don't mind - I did however have a mis-step when I mailed the first time to Canada - it's my neighbor north (I could drive there in about 5.5 hours) and my package was over four pounds and the shipping ended up being $49 and some change. Post master advised me that if I want to ship internationally to stay under the four pound limit, try to use a bubble wrapped envelope and make certain to tape it closed - I've been averaging around $20 or less on my international shipping the last few times. |
I spent $29 for a large envelope the last time I mailed international, Trying to buy small, light things that will fit in a padded envelope this time!

Sorry UFO! |
I picked up a couple of 1/2 yd pieces of neutral fabric today for my sp. SHe also likes a special type of M&M candy.

When I sent my SP package to kninette in Scotland, my postal
worker told me that I COULD use a padded flat rate envelope but to keep the costs lower DO NOT pack it OVER 4 pounds. He also told me that as long as it was under 4lbs that you would only be required to fill out a "short form" declaration customs form and to be sure to declare it as a gift. Also completing the form online helps to speed up that mailing time because if the customs form is hand written than someone at the post office will have to type all that info into the computer anyways which could delay your package being mailed. Of course I have only done the international mailing once so I took everything that my postal worker said to "heart" and followed their advice to the letter.

Yep will go with a padded envelope. That is what lady at postal recommended and all of you here. Thanks.

Just an update on my sp package is is officially in the hands
(or machines?) of the USPS so hopefully you will have it by Friday at the latest, but it has been known for my packages to make it in 2 days. At least when I send something to my friend in VA she seems to get it in two days. I have only seen one post from my sp. Hmmm wonder if she is lurking or busy working and not able to log on. |
What's up? Still no clues for me? Rats!!!
My clue for you: Northern Hemisphere Golf-y |
Ok starting out with a clue, SP is in an area where agriculture is important to the area.
Nancy I was thinking maybe your sp collects flip flops but maybe they aren't out of season in the southern areas, maybe it is halloween stuff. belfrybat- in addition to what Teresa said about most wanted item-another thing is the swap is to kind of get to know others. So maybe your SP listed her truly most wanted item even though it is way beyond the listed budget as a way to get to know her. Others may list a 'most wanted item' that is within the budget but may not be the most wanted item that they want of anything, this swap is about having fun and getting to know each other, and spending lots of time on the board. Oh and for International or even domestic, flat rate isn't always the best price, if it would cost more to send the regular way-first class or parcel or even regular priority-and will fit in flat rate, then it is a deal, other wise send a normal method. If you have a scale at home you could check the cost with the usps site to see what the different ways to send cost, also if you like to print your paid label and have it picked up -you do have to do flat rate for that. I have seen many times people come into the post office with their stuff in a opened box, have the clerk weigh it and then either take it to the customer use counter and seal it up and address it or transfer it into a flat rate box after getting the rates from the clerk. |
SP #1 You have not yet guessed that I am your SP for March
SP #2 You have guessed that I am your SP for March however I have not acknowledged it until now |

Belfrybat, you are not obligated to get the most wanted item, only if you want to and are able. It's just a good suggestion of getting something your sp actually wants. I have gone way over budget many times, and so have others, but you don't have to. I myself, will always get the most wanted item for my sp so long as it doesn't cost over $20, but that's me. I do this because I know it's something my sp wants the most, not because I have to. I have seen you other times mention money as an issue in this swap. All you are obligated to spend is $10 (that does NOT include S&H), nothing more unless you want to. And that doesn't mean get everything at the dollar store. Others spend more because either they want to or have collected things in the past by getting on sale or buying 2 or 3 of the same while out, etc. So as long you yourself are spending your $10 budget, stop worrying about the rest. I like the most wanted item to stay for reasons I have already stated.

Wow I don't understand all the bickering on here. I really enjoy getting anything, even if I didn't ask for it. I don't post often and when I do my post don't usually get any responses. This is one reason I don't usually join things on account of bickering but up until lately that had not been going on in this group, why now? Lets just enjoy what we get and if you don't want it or like just pass it on. Now that I have said my piece I will go back to my corner.

SP Hints for today...Doesn't like licorice and doesn't own an embroidery machine.

Well said Verna. |
Verna I agree and I love your Avitar..so I wish you would post more often. Now, I guess I will copy a bit as well, Quilty Louise...my package is out for delivery somewhere in CA 950551084829306350****. I so hope it will be enjoyed. If not, it doesn't bother me if you pass it on...I did really try to make it personal...will see for sure in a day or so! I went to 3 shops trying to find special wants and was only about 50-60% successful.
Now come on ladies and lilghten the load...this swap is fun and it is heart healthy. (Per Dr. Oz laughter is heart healthy!) |

I have been to three different stores looking for the candy my SP wanted - can't find it anywhere. Did find it in the 'morsel' area (where the chocolate chips are). Guess her box will be candy-less. One more item and off it goes hopefully by this weekend - still out on time, just a little later than normal for me.
SP #2, your box went out today. I got carried away with it, but it's your birth month, so that's my excuse. |
