Waahoo! I'm excited. This is my first r/r robin... and I'm doing 2! For this group, I'm did a row of mostly traditional 12.5" blocks in shabby chic colors. I've got a picture around here somewhere - I'll have to find it and post tomorrow.

What do y'alls rows look like?

Melody MO/KS 09-18-2012 09:27 AM

Okay I found it and this is my first Row Robin as well as new to the QB. I too am excited. I'm going to be easy to please since I will be learning about the way things work. What do we do first?

Melody MO/KS 09-18-2012 09:36 AM

I haven't decided but will probable stay with traditional block. The Theme is "As You Like It". No requests other than enjoy and do what makes each person happy. After I have been through this first one boy, look out! I may have lots of do's and don'ts. LOL

Here is my row. The picture looks sideways, but that's the easiest way to see the row like it should be. I think.

TheMamaHauser 09-18-2012 11:01 AM

Ok, I've "borrowed" this post from Lisa_wanna_b_quilter, the team leader for #5. I guess we should be addressing these issues among ourselves before we do anything else:

2 of our group members are up in the air (as I understand it) right now, so once that gets sorted out, I'll get the mailing addresses to the correct people. You will always send to the same person each time, so you only have to keep track of one address instead of 5 (or 4, really, because you already know your own address).

Mailing Dates

You have two months to get each round done.

1st Row – mail by Dec. 1st
Row 2 – Feb. 1st
Row 3 – April 1st
Row 4 – June. 1st
Row 5 – Aug. 1st

I have never done this before so feel free to jump in with suggestions of things that have worked in the past if you have experience or ideas.

We need to make a few decisions.

#1. Sashing? If someone wants sashing on their quilt, do you mind if the sashing strips are included for each person to add with their row? It could increase mailing cost a bit, but I doubt much.

#2. How do you want to handle labels?

#3. How should the quilt owner convey their vision of the quilt to the group? I was thinking each owner could send along letter stating their theme and what that theme means to them. Any other suggestions or ideas?

#4. Should rows be mailed early if finished early?

#5. How do we feel about posting the tracking number for packages as they go out? They must be insured per the R/R rules; if you purchase the postage online through USPS, the tracking is included (i.e., free). If you mail via the post office (building, not website) I believe there is a charge to add tracking (I think less than $1.00).

Oh my it's lovely! Am I behind already?!?!?! Good Grief. HE HE:) I have been on line most of the day looking at fabric, my eyes are bugged out!

ebellot 09-18-2012 06:48 PM

Hi everyone, very exiced about doing a row robin. This is my second one hope this goes better than the last one. I havent made a whole lot of quilts. I sew surgical hats for extra money to buy my fabric for my quilts, table runners. My theme is red white and black. In the row robin I was in one of the theme was red white and black and I loved the colors togeather. I am retired and on a fixes income. I reather not do sashing but if everyone else is ok with it I will do it. In the row robin I was in I made a lable for each row I made. #3 I think whatevery way the person would like to do it. #4 Yes I think rows should be mailed when finished. #5 I like the idea about posting the tracking number. Will we have a name for our row? I cant waite to get started but I have 88 and more to be delivered by Nov. 1 I think I will take a day off from my hats and make a couple of my blocks hehehe. Happy quilting everyone. Evelyn

TheMamaHauser 09-18-2012 06:52 PM

Nope - I'm in school 18 credit hours this semester and when I signed up, I thought my husband was going to be deployed from Aug until May - so I worked ahead to make room for the other (inevitable) projects that were on the horizon. And then my husband got bumped due to medical stuff, so now he's home stressing me out and getting in my way instead of over there stressing me out.

Minor change to ya'lls group. Shana is moving to Group #9 and will be replaced by Dragonfly Nana :)

So your group will now go in this order:

Group 2
Leader -TheMamaHauser
Dragonfly Nana
Texasunset
Melody MO/KS
ebellot

Thanks ladies!!! :D

TheMamaHauser 09-19-2012 04:42 PM

Yay! I'm glad that's all sorted out. So I have addresses - I am going to send you a PM with the address of the person you'll send each package to. Remember, you'll always send to the same person each time :)

I'm going to send those PM's out now.

Qbee 09-19-2012 04:45 PM

You should have Dragonfly Nana's address as well....just look through the list. She knows she has been switched and will most likely be checking in soon :D

Dragonfly Nana 09-19-2012 04:55 PM

Hello ladies! Glad this "switch" happened early in the game. This is my first row robin and I am excited.
From what I have read so far it seems like we are all "open" in our themes. Mine is stars and I plan to call the quilt Twinkle, Twinkle
My take on the items in question:
#1 I agree - if the owner wants sashing they can send it along and we can add it as we go. If no sashing is sent then we just add our row to the package and mail along
#2 Again, if owner wants us to sign one they can include it - Otherwise we attach a little address label to our row.
#3 I like the idea of sending a letter or: In a Round Robin we sent a small notebook where we wrote something and so the others could write down thoughts or a message
#4 Yes, but only if it is ok with the next person in line. We would not want one to get "lost" or have someone feel overwhelmed if they do not work as fast as others.
#5 Great idea. I ship DQs every month at the machine and it is a whopping $.70 Well worth it to know it is safe or can be found.
This is going to be so much fun!

TheMamaHauser 09-19-2012 05:00 PM

Oh, I didn't think of these questions:

- Are we posting pictures after we finish each round?

- Are we attaching rows or leaving up to preference of the row "owner"? For instance, I personally don't care if each row is sewn to the previous one. But if you are hyper OCD or not sure if you're going to do sashing, you might say you don't want the rows connected. I am all for leaving it up to each person, but I promise to make life easy for all of y'all and say just sew 'em down.

Qbee 09-19-2012 05:03 PM

Please post lots and lots of pictures!!! He-he-he :D

Dragonfly Nana 09-19-2012 05:05 PM

I vote Yes to pictures as we go - it is so much fun to see what everyone does. Who wants to wait until the end?

Ooh - good point about connecting rows. I would prefer to do it when it comes home (not sure if I am going to add sashing yet) but I will do whatever each person want.

BTW - I love your siggy line! So very true :)

Dragonfly Nana 09-19-2012 05:06 PM

Qbee - are you going to be surfing the groups for pictures too?

Qbee 09-19-2012 05:15 PM

you bet....that's what makes it all so fun....EYE CANDY!!!!

I have several motivational things I rotate through. I'm testing them out for my classroom (whenever I actually get one of my own).

Melody MO/KS 09-20-2012 05:57 AM

I just received my sent from and send to people, thanks.

As to my opinion of the items listed, sashes and labels should be up to the owner. Pictures add to the fun and excitement! It is also good to take precautions on sending these treasures. Looking forward to this .

texasunset 09-20-2012 05:59 AM

Okay ya'll. Thanks for the patience while Shana and I got separated! LOL! We are sisters and live together and it didn't even occur to us to ask to be in different groups until the lists were posted. ;) On to the big questions:

1) Sashing - include it if you want to, I still don't know what I'm going to do as far as sashing yet
2) Labels? What are they? What are they for? Permanent or removable?
3) A letter or note is fine by me or even just a post to the Group Thread
4) I'm all for mailing as soon as you are finished as long as the receiving party is ready for it.
5) I am all for tracking #'s (I tend to stress and worry )
6) Pictures please!
7) I would say to just include your preferences for attaching or not attaching in your instructions from #3

I'm am so pumped to get this started!

Texasunset,
I want to include a label so that each person can sign it, date it, and where they are from to sew on the back of the quilt when it's finished.

Dragonfly Nana 09-20-2012 12:34 PM

Hi Texasunset - nice to hear from you. Have you decided on a theme yet?

TheMamaHauser 09-20-2012 04:53 PM

For me, I have always done labels by using heat'n'bond (or steam-a-seam) on the back of my "label" fabric - generally something neutral that blends with the quilt.

You can write on it with the Pigma Micron pens or the sharpies or other permanent fabric pens. Most likely, I'll just send something like that for you all to sign. I've seen Joanns and most LQS carry the pens for $2-4 each (depending on the store & tax).

Another option is to print one out on an ink-jet (either using the premade sheets @ Joanns, etc or by making your own) and sending that out along with your row. The nice aspect of that is you can print it out - so you can get pictures or graphics or whatever in the world that you want on it.

Google "quilt label ideas" and then look at the images that come up. If you can't figure out how to implement your idea, throw it out on the thread here and we can brainstorm a way to make it work.

Dragonfly Nana 09-20-2012 07:47 PM

I heard about a lady who asked every one to embroider their initials on one block for their row - cool idea as an alternate to a label on the back.
Not sure what I am going to do yet.

texasunset 09-21-2012 06:19 AM

I had a theme but I am re-thinking it...I hate to see a theme duplicated in the group. What has everyone else decided on?

Dragonfly Nana 09-21-2012 09:17 AM

Mama is doing "Shabby Chic" see pics on page one of this thread
Melody is doing a traditional style "As You Like It" which I think means we can make anything we like
ebellot is doing Red, White and Black
Dragonfly is doing Stars

I think I want a Flower Garden...:)

TheMamaHauser 09-21-2012 01:33 PM

I forgot that my name isn't in my signature anymore... You guys can just call me Kelly. No one else calls me Mom except my son & my dog. :) Oh, and my husband when he's yelling at my son or my dog about something that I'm upset about.

Dragonfly Nana 09-21-2012 02:12 PM

LOL - Ok Kelly it is . I am so used to being called Nana/Mom I sometimes forget my real name!

Texasunset - I like the idea of a Flower Garden - that would be very pretty.

Dragonfly Nana 09-22-2012 06:30 AM

Kelly asked earlier but I will ask again - any suggestions for a name for our group?
It may be kind of cheesy but I was thinking of a word play on the fact that we are Group #2 like these:
Sewing Deuces or Double Stitchers or Twin Threads

Two Fibers? (ie, fabric & thread)

Double Trouble

Two to Tango

Dragonfly Nana 09-22-2012 09:43 AM

Good ones - I like Two Fibers

Melody MO/KS 09-22-2012 04:43 PM

I think I like Double Stitchers. My second one would be Double Trouble after one of our colleagues. lol

ebellot 09-25-2012 09:32 AM

Hi everyone I like two fibers. How is every one doing on there row? Thought I picked an easy one but I still have to pick fabric for it . Thought I could use my stach but like always I dont have enough. Still have about 80 more hats to do but just wanted to check in. Have to go back to work. Have a wonderful day

Dragonfly Nana 09-28-2012 04:32 PM

That's 2 each for Two Fibers and Double Stitchers

Texasunset - you will be the tie breaker!

texasunset 09-29-2012 09:45 AM

Ok...Double Stitchers it is! :D

Dragonfly Nana 09-29-2012 06:16 PM

Yeah! Kelly - is there any way to get our name added to the heading for this thread?

I am getting anxious to start on my star blocks....I finished a baby quilt on Thursday and have pieced all by 4 blocks of a Birthday quilt that is due by mid November today. I may just have to switch over to the stars tomorrow!

TheMamaHauser 09-30-2012 01:30 PM

I will message Qbee and see if we can do it.

Sorry for taking so long to respond lately - I am dealing with my "busy" 3 weeks of the semester and when I say "busy" I mean I am only getting 3 hrs of sleep a night because of everything going on. It's a small (but painful) price to pay to have 2 full days off per week starting mid-October.

Dragonfly Nana 09-30-2012 03:08 PM

No need to apologize Kelly - we all have lives that sometimes keep us from the QB! LOL

I hope you don't get too warn out with the lack of sleep. Fortunately fabric doesn't spoil
