You sure made me laugh at that. Thank you. Hasn't been much to laugh at lately over here.

I've never participated in a swap before. Can you explain how the swap part works?

So I make a self portrait (LOVE this idea) and then...?

-- Jillaine
sign me up anyway; i want to do this. already wheels are turning

look up swaps outline for self portrait mug rug, i have the link posted on this thread. glad you are joining in.

jillaine 04-29-2011 07:58 PM

I read the general instructions (which were really more rules than instructions). Still unsure about the swap part. So when I'm done (and since posting the above, I've started, and I'm about half-way done-- VERY fun!), I'm going to send it somewhere. And I *think* I'm going to receive someone else's? Guess I'm just a bit confused about why someone would want a self portrait of ME...

AND can I just say that googling "self portrait quilt" especially at images.google.com was also very very fun and inspiring. There are some DANG good artists out there!

With most swaps, i usually research the topics and info about the my swap partner. this allows me to send them something i think they would like. With this swap I have the opportunity to send a swap partner something that reflects my like, colors, fabric, etc. Best of all I will recieve something from someone that tells me a little about them.

jillaine 04-30-2011 10:21 AM

Okay, well, I may need your guidance when we get to the researching our swap partner.

In the meantime, while you have posted YOUR self portrait, are we supposed to refrain from doing so on ours so that it's a surprise?

abdconsultant 04-30-2011 01:51 PM

Starting now you may post anything you can, we all want to see your progress and decision making, that is if you want us to see it.

So THIS swap is a bit different in that instead of sending our swap partner something we think they would like, we are sending them something that represents us (and vice versa)? Right? Still trying to get a handle on this swap thang.

Clearly a newbie...
Jillaine
p.s. and at some point you tell us who our swap partner is?

abdconsultant 05-01-2011 10:06 AM

yes you got it.

Gladys 05-01-2011 01:07 PM

jillaine,
You are not the only new one to swaps, lol. Sounds like your absolutely on the right track. I've got a picture of mine in my head but haven't started yet. So you're much farther along than I am. Don't worry. Yours will be great!!!Yes I'm pretty sure it's your idea of what represents you.
Can't wait to see it.

Mine is truly a mug rug but I think it can be a small wall hanging. Very 3D as in example!!

Well that's not very fair. How do I steal everyone else's ideas???
:P
Just kidding. Still need to find time to sew. Busy at work busy at home with sick hubby. Will try to post something this weekend.

DBrooks 05-04-2011 08:11 PM

I've got ideas swirling in my head but nothing to show for it yet. will post pics when I do!

hobbykat1955 05-05-2011 01:48 PM

Finished mine...in fact I did two...I liked the first one so much I did another to keep one...I'm now putting the binding on and it will be ready to go when name is rec'd...
This was a great idea because it got everyone thinking
"who am I" and how to translate that to fabric...

Correct...Then on the 15th the coordinator will Private Message each one of us with the name of our swap partners...You then send a PM to that person for their name and address. Mail out by the end of the mth to that person and vice versa...When you rec your partners mug rug you then post a photo of what you rec'd and each of us do the same so we can all enjoy the finished products...This is my second Mug Rug swap so I think I'm right...

dotcomdtcm 05-05-2011 02:43 PM

Let's remember to send thank you treats to our hostess.
How about coasters?! PM me for her address. (More fun!)

Here is what I have so far. I too, decided to make 2 of them, so I can keep one. I do not have the rows sewn together yet. See if you can guess what some of the fabrics represent.

Oh, I had some of the fabric pictures upside down. LOL I guess I am a little scatter brained, but that is not in the mug rug!

Hugs & kisses to you!

Hope your husband feels better. On a lighter note, since you admit that we may be kindred sisters, and you are trying to steal someone else's ideas, why don't we set a specific time to send brain thoughts across the earth and maybe you can pick my brain and osmosis will occur....... and then you will pick up and have some of my ideas. What do you think?

:P

Well, you are so right, the lighthouse is not in Kansas. In fact, I saw my first light house in New York on our trip to Niagra Falls and I loved it. I am a huggy person and I love to hug everyone.

Great idea. How about coasters using some of the fabric we used in our self portraits?

abdconsultant 05-05-2011 04:45 PM

I love to see the process, thanks so much for posting, everyone will need to post a photo of their mug rug before they are mailed

luckylindy333 05-05-2011 05:14 PM

Dot, I love your self portrait that ended up as your avatar. Are you going to make another one? I started, was going to write Express across the top and Yourself along the left side. Then I was going to make a silhouette and fill it in with stuff that I like. That is where I got stuck. I could not find a picture of a woman's silhouette that I liked. I will hit it again this weekend.

dotcomdtcm 05-05-2011 05:33 PM

That's not my self portrait. It's from our hostess I think.
Mine is much more abstract.

Stand in front of a lamp, so your silhouette is on the wall and have someone take a picture. Then scale it down and trace it onto a pattern and cut it out on material.

I'm using my avatar as my self portrait mug rug. I have never had to design a face, especially my own. I think it is coming together at last. I really like these colors, and yes my hair is white.

abdconsultant 05-06-2011 01:46 PM

rose, that is soo cool. Can't wait to see it completed.

OK decided to show you all the first one I did and decided to keep for myself...The one I'll be swapping has been revised and has many adjustments...So you'll have to wait and see that after it's swapped and posted by partner...
