Decided to just go with the black binding and not search further for more of the (not at all) 'ugly'. Using a brown fleece as backing/batting. Got it all pinned together ready to stitch. Hope I can get that done tomorrow.

Here is the quilt top I made from my "ugly" fabric. It is twin size and does not have a designated recipient. I had fun making this one and using up a lot of hard to use fabrics. I like how it turned out too. I think it will make a great masculine quilt. Does anyone still think I got the ugliest fabric?

Hi Foxflower, your quilt is awesome! You really made the best use of your odd-ball fabrics. A great quilt for sure!

Not sure why they rated it as being difficult. I'll definitely be making this pattern again!

Great quilt, thanks for sharing the pattern too!

Foxflower 08-03-2012 09:07 AM

Thank you JenniePennie. I like it.

marytoddliz 08-11-2012 11:20 AM

I love the quilt! I am always looking for a cool quilt to make for the guys. I don't see anything ugly about your fabric, Great Job!

I think it is time for a New ugly Fabric Swap! I just got another delivery from my sister! She is so kind and loving, but doesn't get it! So I have some stuff that looks like it came out of the drug induced 60's LOL.

Foxflower 08-11-2012 08:21 PM

Mary, I'd love to see pics of some of your psychadelic fabrics! Got any tie-dye in there? ;) I'm glad you like that quilt top. I think I've identified someone to finish it for and give it too.

Nexxus831 08-14-2012 03:15 PM

Ok so does everyone want to do another ugly fabric quilt challenge? If so would you want to change up some of the rules?

marytoddliz 08-14-2012 06:55 PM

I would love to do another ugly fabric exchange, what rule changes did you have in mind?

bearisgray 08-14-2012 07:24 PM

I thought there were some great fabrics in there - that if they had been up for sale (which I know they weren't) I would definitely been interested in acquiring them.

I guess beauty - and/or ugly - truly is in the eye of the beholder.

Foxflower 08-14-2012 07:48 PM

I would be interested in the swap....not sure about the challenge part. My to-do list for this coming year is gigantic!!! Some of the "ugly" pieces I have are kinda small. Is there a way we could arrange to swap smaller pieces this time--cooridating charms, strips, 1/8 yards or something like that?

How about still sending 1/2 yard, but it can be in strips, F8s, whatever, and if more than one fabric, they need to go together, (color or type or theme)? And the challenge would be optional, just as it was for this swap.

Foxflower 08-15-2012 04:44 PM

That would be nice an flexible MdmSew'n'Sew.

Elisabrat 08-15-2012 07:19 PM

Hello everyone! Marybeth has told me I should join an ugly fabric swap as I own the worlds ugliest fabric. In fact I am thinking of gifting her with it as she is so kind. It would probably go with her hideous 60's stuff.. mine I think is grovy 70's and probaby even has some poly in it for the heck of it. Our sisters are having a laugh gifting us with these things. I think they know each other and possibly shop at the same place. How about an ugly duckling exchange? see what swans are made, everyone put up a f/4 sent with the fabric. Winner of the best swan quilt gets the fat 4's? voted on by well qb members and you can't vote for your own quilt. Best swan, worst duck etc.. we could all be winners! will watch to see if you start one then will happily sign up.

Elisabrat 08-15-2012 07:20 PM

oh yes and the F/4's have to be NICE current quilting fabric not uglies.

sewellie 08-15-2012 07:31 PM

I would be interested, so count me in for one. My "beauties" are mostly FQ's. I will be watching to see how this transpires.

Will you be posting rules and time frames soon?

I have shipped small amounts of fabric in a legal sized envelope. I wrapped the fabric in saran wrap to keep if from damage.

Ellie (aka sewellie)

marytoddliz 08-15-2012 08:24 PM

Great idea! I think it would be fun to have a contest! But you would have to work out all the details before hand... I hope the quilting police would not be the judges! I would not win~

Elisabrat 08-17-2012 07:04 AM

We band together Marybeth, like build a fortress with our backs, not letting the police peek over our shoulders and that way no one can see what we are doing. OH the QPolice CAN NOT BE JUDGES heck they judge everything anyways let them play in their own swimming pool for a while. does this mean I cant gift you with that hot pink, jumbo flowers print I have? I was thinking, duffle laundry bag thing.. put your laundry in that and leave it at the dorm laundryroom no one would steal it.

I will be watching to see what you all decide. Mine however is 2 yards or so so I refuse to send less than the whole thing in good spirit and all that :) I dont mind the bigger envelope :) Oh oh and I like that top with the wheels too.. darned you were busy that is a big quilt! and I would have hated that fabric otherwise yet there it is...not looking bad at all. Swan? yup.

Foxflower 08-17-2012 09:34 AM

Ladies, I am super curious now about these so called horrible fabrics. I would love to see pictures!

Some of us posted pictures when we got our swap package - but the fabric I sent is so darn plug ugly, whoever got it won't even admit it, let alone post a picture :D If you go through the thread, you'll see some of the fabrics we received - I have fabrics to go with the lovely piece I received, just have to decide on a pattern and put it together - as soon as I finish a couple of other overdue projects. Maybe another week or so ... I'm still thinking about what I want to do with it.

Nexxus831 08-17-2012 06:28 PM

Ok I am all for using the same rules and such. I would just need to pick some dates for deadlines. Is everyone ok with that? If we are I will email the lady to post the new dates and such.

I too never heard from the poor person who received my "ugly" from the previous exchange. Maybe it was just too ugly and they took it to the nearest trash can. LOL I still have 75% of my creation finished. It is still on the design board. I actually loved the piece of fabric I got.

Count me in on another exchange. I will have to start digging to find just the perfect piece.

I will try my hardest this time around to take a picture and label the members name with it and who gets what

I participated in the original swap and saw the fabrics, etc. I even completed a top. What I want to see are pictures of the new "horrible" fabrics Elisabrat and her friend got from their sisters!

marytoddliz 08-20-2012 02:52 PM

Ah, the hippy fabric! I will have to find it and take a picture for you! I actually don't hate it but I am not sure what to do with it.

kiffie2413 08-20-2012 03:10 PM

Hi all,
Well I didn't get in on the 1st ugly fabric challenge, but as I was reading this thread, I did buy the quilt top that JenniePenny made from the fabric she received as I loved it!! So, I am putting my name in the hat to sign up for the next uf swap if and when there is one!!
Regards,
Kif

Nexxus831 09-12-2012 07:59 PM

Ok Everyone, For the next swap we are going to be using some fabric from my stash that is "ugly" I have five or more yards. I still need to get approval from the site but I will be mailing everyone a fat quarter of this "ugly" and it will be interesting to see everyone's different idea's of the fabric. You will need it to be at least a lap size quilt, only has to be the top and you must use all the "ugly" fabric in the FRONT of the quilt and only use four other fabrics with it. What do you ladies think about this idea?

Melinda

marytoddliz 09-12-2012 08:11 PM

Melinda, we would all be using the same fabric to make our lap quilts? Then do we exchange them? I am not sure I completely understand? Or would it be like a Boomerang where we all send out ugly fabric and get blocks back! LOL... might be funny!

Nexxus831 09-12-2012 08:48 PM

We all would get the same "ugly fabric" and make a lap size quilt and keep it for ourselves. It wouldn't be a swap it would be more of a challenge. Just to see how we all use the fabric differently. Does that clarify it for you?

Foxflower 09-16-2012 10:52 AM

This sounds interesting, and if I didn't have so many pressing projects I'd participate. Right now my list is mind boggling!

MdmSew'n'Sew 09-16-2012 04:16 PM

Now this sounds interesting! I could really get into this one:thumbup:

Nexxus831 09-16-2012 09:01 PM

Well I won't be doing it until after the first of the year. I am just way too swamped and I figure with the holidays everyone is swamped also.

DON YOUR SUNGLASSES, note the thread for size of cool groovy pattern.. you asked for it.. there is an old saying be careful what you wish for.. go ahead marybeth top that one...

Nexxus831 09-16-2012 10:17 PM

Linda,

hahahaha I have a couple hideous ones here that I have over 5yds of so this challenge should be spectacularly fun.

marytoddliz 09-16-2012 10:57 PM

Linda, that is ugly! I can't even think of what you would make with that! maybe a bbq cover! I will post my picture but i really don't want to offend anyone, I actually sent some of it out in a group for Boom 7.

the blocks I got back are really cute but I have no idea what I am going to do with them... I think I have 7 of them and about 3 more yards of the fabric!

but this one is really bad, 7 yards of WWF... i figure some day I might get a customer that is a fan and wants a quilt!

I don't know what I was thinking with this one! 5 yards, and I really don't like it!

Nexxus831 09-17-2012 12:09 AM

Marybeth,

I would actually purchase the WWF fabric from you. I have a cousin whom is a HUGE fan and so is her hubby and son. I could defiantly find a use for it. If you find you want to sell it let me know. I am interested.

Melinda

Nexxus831 09-17-2012 12:11 AM

or if you could give me the name on that fabric and the manufacturing all that stuff they put on the selvedge. Please

Elisabrat 09-17-2012 06:23 AM

Which just goes to prove there is a rear for every chair. The wrestling one is the one that one for me and that green mystery critter one.. guess you could cut it up and use it as a blender type hippie one.. placemats for the cool and groovy to be sure. BBQ cover: I like my neighbors need I say more?

I think it would be more fun for everyone to contribute fabric but maybe a swap Melinda where instead of you shouldering the burden of sending fabric to everyone and all that keeping track just say ok your pared with so and so and then we send each other x amount of ugly fabric I think 1/4 yard or 1/2 yard max and a wall hanging or other useful item has to be made with it as the focal point. Say a table mat/runner size would be fast and fun and heck there are always two sides to it so you could in theory not be wasting time or money on an ususable you know? and we send them back to each other this would ensure extra effort and well thought into the whole thing. Just a though .. fun fast and easily finished in say a month or six weeks? I have some marvelous floral stuff right out of your 70's home, inherit some real beauties.

Foxflower 09-17-2012 07:08 AM

Ladies, thanks for the pictures!!! Those are amazing. If you don't hate the colors, just the prints, have you considered cutting them up for a Blooming 9-patch? That can really blend away your troubles and isn't difficult. It is also a really good use for larger yardages, odd multi-colors, and various size prints.

Nexxus, I'll stay tuned since the next ugly t will be after the holidays.
