I save my insul brite for hot pads which I use along with a layer of cotton batting, but use only cotton batting in my mug rugs.

I did use only a layer of insul-brite in the mug rug I made for the Christmas swap. Just happened to have some and thought it seemed like a good idea. I liked the way it turned out and hope it holds up OK for my swap partner. I'll probably use it for the Valentine swap, also.

It sounds like the general consensus is that insul-brite is for pot holders and mug rugs are just fine with regular batting. Thanks for all of the input folks, that's what I wanted to know!

That is something I didn't think of. Whether or not IB holds up well in a mug rug. My potholders do fine. I suppose neither a MR or a PH has to be washed often. I liked the way that it turned out using it in a mug rug, too.

I'm just really looking forward to finding out who my partner is this time. I have some ideas but nothing specific yet.

I'm thinking that what ever we have on hand will work fine for a small piece like the mug rugs. It's all good!

Insulbrite is not necessary. They are for a small snack and a cup of coffee or tea, not a hot casserole out of the oven....

I'm a traditionalist - personally I will savor all the chocolates you want to send to me - I like the heart shaped boxes with all the delicious creations inside. I'll put all the beautiful long stem roses that seem to be in abundance this time of year in a vintage vase that was a wedding gift to my grandmother back in the very early 30's.

As for the mug rug, I will love whatever my partner makes for me.

Hi gang...this is me...the observer..just adding my two cents worth about the stuffing inside a mug rug. I use my leftover pieces of Warm and Natural...or in a pinch, I have just used 2-3 layers of flannel. That along with the back and front make a nice mug rug. You can tell when you sandwich it, how much is too much. Remember it is just to sit a cup of something on and it might not always be a 'hot' something. I think of Mug Rugs as glorified coasters...only larger and room for a neat snack. So they don't need to be really thick. Sounds like everyone has it under control now though. If I didn't say it before...I will say it now...Happy 2015 to everyone!

I,m looking forward doing this MR. Valentines is one of my favorite days. I will like whatever you make for me. I do like hearts, colors red, pink and purples. Just HAVE FUN doing what you like to do and do your best. That is what I tell myself. Try something new outside of your box. You just might surprise yourself.

I appreciate all of the input from everyone. Quilting is a creative art with lots of room for individual choices and so, by extension, is mug rug making. :) Probably pretty hard to go wrong no matter how you sandwich them together!

ok I know you were dying for my opinion lol but here it is. Regular batting is just fine for a mug rug. As Jan stated its not to hold something hot from the oven. Just a mug of hot tea or coffee. Or an iced cup which will not cause damaged to your tables if its one which can be affected by ice drippings. :) insulated batting is over kill but will not hurt anything either. If you chose one or the other you will be ok. Its just easier in my thoughts to sew with batting than insulated batting. ugh that is tougher for me to get right.

I think this is our last day ladies! partners get ready to hear from your partner on what they love and heck send all the treats to ME. this way no on has hard feelings, lots little I don't care. send away! wait.. I don't eat sweets. darn it. except for that marvelous black jelly bean. I love those things. great for the teeth, tongue and lips. I think that zombie look is great on me. (like I care?). I am infatuated with those old fashioned candy boxes however. oh my DABBLER you TAKE THE FLOWERS OFF THEM? omg I would love to have a half dozen to decorate with! when I was very very young (way back when) my mother would get them, ruffled, with roses on top.. the prettiest box I had ever seen. and stuffed with candy? OMG I used to eat candy like it was going out of style. heck I would hide under the kitchen counter with the sugar bowl and eat it by the spoonful. never made me hyper but it did not do wonders for my teeth sigh. cavity central as a kid. really? what a surpise! now I am sugared out I suppose. its a good thing.

Linda, did I read that we are up to 46 swappers? That's terrific! I love the idea of opening as soon as we get them, so we can use them through Valentine's Day. Got my MR finished, can't wait to see who I get so I can personalize my package for them! These are so much fun.

Ah, candy. I can't have any. Sniff. Especially chocolate. I'm one of the only people on the planet that is allergic to chocolate!! Now licorice on the other hand.... yum.
And I certainly remember the shoebox with the slit in the top to stuff those cute little valentines in from my classmates!! Sometimes they were actually signed by the student, but many times by their mother!

MizMelly, Thanks for posting this. I suppose since VD is such a sweet holiday and a lot of times centers around candy, we should specify IF we can indulge in our information. I, like some others, cannot. So, it would be a waste of someone's hard earned money to buy/send me candy or other treats. This is not a secret swap so we will be able to let our partner know.

Good idea! I do indulge occasionally, but I have to be careful since I am diabetic. I've been allergic to chocolate since I was a kid, and it's not a fun allergy. There are lots of other cute things that can go into a swap tho that do not include candy!! Fat quarters, socks, notepads, pens, needles, pins, etc, etc. I'm not saying that one HAS to put in any of those items, just suggestions of alternatives to candy!
On another note, I'm thinking hearts and roses for my MR's!!! I've already started!

Brat, i remember wheni was about 3 and discovered butter and sugar. sitting in the pantry very quietly sticking the stick of butter in the sugar. then i thought nothing could be better, till i discovered the BROWN sugar. i still love eating it off the spoon. but back then, i would eat it with brownsugar and butter on a stick. MMmmmm. then.... I got caught. wow was i in trouble for that one. but worth it. No one wanted to hear about my new discovery, I must have been covered in sugar and all over the floor, coz i remember getting in trouble for the ants. Ahhh, Sweet memories. I'm good for anything dear sweet partner.

I love sweets, not big on chocolates, but love sour candies (that speaks to my personality I guess..).
But I did eat the Andes chocolate mints Jaba sent and the Lil chocolate Snickers I got on the last fq swap. So I can't imagine if I was "big on chocolates".. guess then I'd be "big FROM chocolates".. ;)

For me, my tummy can't "stomach" sugar free candy. I know my teeth and triglycerides wish I could eat sugar free candy, however..lol..
But my dentist loves me, I'm a terrific patient to have, job security for her...haha

I got in minimal trouble linny for my sugar bowl experience but did have to hear about it for years and years to come. oh wheres peachy? (my lil kid nick name) is she under the counter again eating sugar? ok I got caught in that same spot eating a jar of apricot jam. yup. first sugar, then jam.. guess I deserved it. but boy was I so embarrassed. :) I never wanted to stick out. it was always to be picked on surely, hiding eating sweets, where is that mouse.. yup it was not good to be the one standing out. Mom was a bit harsh on us as in me. I was the target of the group. lucky lucky me! well not a mouse any longer as you can see :) and you wont find me under the counter eating anything. mostly cause I cant get up from a down spot so much safer on the couch and let them watch me eat whatever I want.

Speaking of eating what I want well.. I had broccolini tonight. its was sweet, tender and worthy. cut the steam to half not 1/3 up but otherall it was delicious blanched then sautéed in garlic butter and tossed with parmesan. omg. don't tell the docs in dialysis. its a no no. BUT until I reach that point where I am over the line with potassium I am safe. I rarely get there. mostly safe with my salts, phosphorus (milks etc) and potassium based foods. if I went by their list I would not eat. no foods but meat would be avail. ok 1/3 rice! or .. heres a big one 1tsp of parmesan. or 1/3 cup pasta! wowsa. no dark green veggies. No whole fruits at all. half of say an apple. weirdest one is I can have canned mushrooms but NO fresh ones. UGH! cant wait for my new kidney. yes I am ready. in one month I can eat everything again. I could do that! less protein? I am all for that! unlimited protein does not inspire me much lol. blick. all the meat I could ever eat. groan. ok ok back to sewing.

I remember getting in trouble as a teen for eating dad's ding dongs that were for his lunch and I was on a diet! The worst trouble I ever got into was when my brother and I invited the neighbor kids over and we found a 1 pound tin of fudge and we all ate it all! My mom was going to sent it to my uncle out in Texas for Christmas. Boy was she mad! I can have goodies but am trying to limit it to only a little since I'm still trying to lose weight on Weight Watchers I can have it but I will want it to last a long time and just eat a little which is extremely hard for me because I want some kind of little tiny sweet every day! I sing this out loud and with true conviction. ok I sing out of tune, and the last one comes out more like trueeeeeeelllllleeeeee but it means the same thing. the dogs and cats look at me in sheer disgust when this happens but hey.. things happen!
