Would you be able to use navy colored knit fabric ? I have some that's dark navy that was in a scrap bag I bought at a yard sale and it has a slick feel to it but no sheen so I'm asssuming it's knit?

I personally wouldn't use knits, but I know they are practically indestructible? LOL! I'm in love with 100% cotton fabrics for all quilting...I would think that using different kinds of fabrics would make the quilt more difficult wearable-wise??? I've heard you should use the same kinds of fabrics in a project. The real old fashioned crazy quilts had limited options, so they used what they had, period, but many fabrics wore out faster than others. Just a thought, but a person can do whatever they want, right? Good luck! .

I've made crazy quilt jackets and vests using cottons only. on the pillows, I've mixed my fabs. I made a cute pillow out of my sons jeans and shirts when he was a baby, came out really cute. my jackets and vests were purely cotton, then embellished with cotton emb floss and beads of al types. on my black white and red jacket, I did use silver lame, backed with a fusible interfacing, to make it the same wt. as the rest of the cottons.

Sewcrafty has been educating me on crazy quilts for awhile now LOL Usually they involve all sorts of fabrics from silk to velvet to cordoroy. I think you could put anything you want in them. the idea is to have as much variety as possible and then to add embellishments over the fabrics.

So if you want to use knit I don't see why not. the fabrics will vary in thickness anyway.

I have some scraps, so this next mailing time/swap time is for bags of scraps correct? I can fill easily a priority mail envelope without any trouble. Will do. Put me in on this one again. Thank you. I am in the process of collecting up more sewing items in a box for the beginning of July swap as well.
As for the crazy quilt. In the early 1400s and such, they used all sorts of fabrics and embellishments for their crazy quilts. That is where the traditional way of doing a crazy started. It is what they had in abundance and the more elaborate the more prominent you were. I personally enjoy my all cotton crazy quilts with a muslin foundation. I like how they wear better. So to answer your question as stated by others, it is your choice on what you want to do. If you are not going to use it very much, then do the fancy with embellishments. If going to use, then do the all cottong without the extra embellishments.

Thank you for the responses on the crazy quilt. I said I'd make my cousin a wedding quilt of some kind and inquired what colors she liked. She likes blues and greens and has a preference for crazy quilts apparently. I wasn't going to do it but realized I could probably QAYG a crazy quilt easily and that it really wouldn't be anymore piecing than other patterns I was considering. I'll use machines for the decorative stitching. I have wool plaid scraps, some sateen, corduroy scraps, and I might be able to come up with some red veluor. So, I might as well try knit too. Sewred, if we are partners I'd be happy to try the knit. Trading scraps with somebody will help offer the variety mentioned. I'm not going to try to make a bed quilt size I don't think. I don't have enough time. They'll have to settle for a lap quilt.

I'm glad you liked everything Sewred! The dishtowel has a Sunbonnet Sue Bonnet on the top. The checkbook I made. I thought that fabric was so appropriate for a quilter.
