We are hoping to move across the state in the next year. Because I am doing some sprucing up I want to repaint my sewing room and put laminate on the floor instead of the carpet. I had always wanted to remove the huge closet doors and put built in shelving to store quilts and stash. If you were looking at a house to buy would that be a game changer for you? There is a second closet with a regular bar and so on. Thanks for your thoughts.

If you are moving in a year maybe now is not a good time to make the change.

If you do make the change, store the doors so they can be re-installed before the sale of your house. The new owners can decide whether to use the closet with shelves or re-install a hanging bar.

I would also store the doors. However, I would rehang them and return the closet to a closet before listing the house.

Is that the only room that you want to put laminate in? If so, it could look odd or be confusing to a buyer. As for the doors, I'd store till listing time, and then return them and clear the closet as much as you can at that time. Buyers don't want to be be confused and don't want to have to do anything. Save your dream room plans for the next house and keep this room looking like a normal bedroom for buyers. A year will go Quickly!

I adjusted my hanging bar in the guest bedroom to half the width of a standard two door closet. My DH put shelving on the other side for my quilt storage. The best of both sides of a closet.

We just moved and I had shelves in the closet, but had left the closet wire shelf in place (has hanger slots). I removed all the shelves and used them in my new sewing room.

Don't remove the doors. Especially if you are moving. Put in shelving, but leave the doors. That means it can be used as a bedroom. Without the doors it isn't a closet and not a bedroom.

As a realtor this is much appreciated. If you move prior to selling your home, I suggest you reattach the doors. Potential buyers frown upon having to do any work prior to move in. That includes reattaching doors and shelving. Your choice to replace the carpeting with other flooring is a big plus. Gives the property a fresh look. Disclosing when it was done is also good and appreciated.

In Texas it's still considered a bedroom if it has a window. Just means it's a doorless closet.
