I understand totally, what is it about getting the room cleaned up and then it is messed up in what seems like seconds? I put fabric on over 100 boards recently and petered out and hadn't got back to it! Got another 100 to go and that is my limit, so I tell myself. I got to get better organize first.

I'm far too ashamed to post pics of my work area.....but I am getting there....with the help of plastic containers, shelving and a label-maker! I have a few WIP that are creating the most mess...I try and keep to the motto JUST DO IT...think I'll write it on the back of my hand to keep me on the straight and narrow.

I was ashamed to let everyone know what a mess I worked in also, but it has helped me because I found lots of good ideas from other board members plus I knew I had to JUST DO IT.

I am still going through, sorting, cleaning out, getting rid of stuff. And my scrap pile just keeps getting bigger and bigger but I am also going to cut it into squares for the future....I just need more hours...

Have fun. Think we are all from the same cloth.

Believe it or not, you don't have enough storage space which is why boxes are piled on boxes. There's nowhere to put anything. Mismatched bookcases don't help...it's more confusion added to the picture.
One thing that might help is for you to buy two small dressers about 30" high and place a long finished piece of plywood across the top. Pad that plywood with batting, pick out some fabric you LOVE and cover the batting with that. Staple in place. You now have a long surface where you can iron, lay things out and store projects in the drawers below.
Also, go to Walmart and buy boxes that are about 2 " deep and about 12 or 13 " long. I think they sell for about $3.99 each. Use one for each project you're working on and then stack them on a bookshelf on top of one another for your UFO stack. Just some thoughts...

Good luck with your project. It will feel better after it's all orderly.

Even just stacking things 'neatly' helps considerably with the visual clutter.
I'm with you on this one, Bearisgray, I'm just so angry with myself sometimes for letting it get so bad week after week!!

I tried to get some more white bookshelves at the time, but could only find black. Maybe I should paint them. It does appear to be helping with me folding the fabric on the comic boards. The room also serves as my office, thus the filing cabinets and I also work on genealogy in there. I have thought about rearranging the room but am limited because I only have power on two walls. But I will get it organized one of these days. Thanks for the encouragement. and advice..

When I am cleaning/reorganizing, I start with 'weeding out' what I don't want/need anymore. This
makes more room for what I do want. Start in one area at a time. Seeing the progress makes you feel enough better to
keep going until completed.

I have emptied out most of my room and have most of my fabric on boards. I donated a lot of fabric that I no longer use. I am anxious to get it finished now and I worked all day Sat & Sun and a few hours at night. Thanks for the encouragement.

I like the idea of using up your fabric in order to organize it but you have to be able to find it first! I moved 4 years ago and still don't have my sewing room set up. I used to work in a sewing machine store so ... I have 2 big tables that unfold, etc and way too many machines. One of these tables is currently in the living room and it is not attractive or being used there. Not to mention scores of the BIG plastic bins (toddler sized) with projects seperated and in the large 2 gallon or bigger ziploc bags. Then there are numerous bins of "assorted miscellaneous". I also do machine embroidery, and machine knitting which has it's own tables and big cones of yarn!! ... I was incredibly lucky and was able to find a big set of used kitchen cabinets that are curently sitting in my garage waiting for inspiration. I don't have the room to spread everything out in order to go thru it. Someday I will have a great sewing area - but when is that day going to be? I did use peg board and that helps alot - rules, zippers, rotary cutters, quilt stencils and small items that I was afraid would get lost in the shuffle.
To make things even better I had a cat that lived in the sewing room 24/7 as a behaviour mod program. He was in there on the advice of the vet but still managed to develop more bladder/kidney stones while on the diet. He is no longer with me and I miss him dreadfully. Still have to get the ground in long fur off my sewing chairs, etc.
the subject of sewing rooms can get complicatred!!
